I realize that they're only $25 a month for unlimited texts, E mails, and internet browsing. What I want to know is.....is there a catch with this? If it was such a great phone, why doesn't more people have them? Would it be a poor coverage? See, I sold one of my bikes to a Northwestern student. He said that he seemed happy with coverage out there. What I would like to know about is coverage out in Michigan? Wisconsin, INdiana? Is it any good? Does Virgin work out there?

I'm really interested in trying it out for a month or 2 just to see if I can live with it. If it works well for me, then I would want my girlfriend to have one. No more paying so much $$ for phone bills.

it is ok, not bad only need text, email and photo. It is good for necessary. not much fancy. it does not have application. my girl has it but she always use my htc for games. She always use it to let me know when she gets home or ask me questions while i wasn't home. it is helpful.

I have used Virgin Mobile for about 3, 4 years.

Overall, I've been happy with them. I use them for voice calls and text messages. The coverage is good (they use the Sprint Network), I don't have dropped phone calls, and, AFAICT, I get my text messages about as quickly as they are sent. I like the way my phone works with my hearing aids and VM uses the CDMA network which is best for hearing aid users.

I would guess that the reason some people may not want to use them is because it's still a 3G network and there's a limited choice of phones. Also, there's the whole keeping up with the Jone's thing. I use a LG Rumor 2 and just the other week someone was ragging me about what an old-fashioned phone it was.

I think its a good idea to try them out while you can still return the phone in case you don't like it.

I do have a few reservations about VM:

1) Reaching a live person by phone is a real exercise in patience. VM wants you to use their automated voice menu system and if you have an issue that requires a person -- too bad. Whenever I call them, I only do so when I have time to be on the phone for about an hour and can use my speakerphone so I don't have to be glued to the handset while waiting for a person.

Their e-mail support is good -- but it takes about a day for them to respond.

I usually don't need "live" help, so when I do, I just suck it up.

However, because they are so difficult to reach in person, I decide not to let them bill me automatically. Others have reported on the web that they have been billed in error when they allowed VM to bill them automatically. So, just to be on the safe side, I pay manually.

2) If you use their pre-paid plan they send you annoying text messages to pay your next bill before your service expires, BUT your next expiration date moves up as soon as you pay regardless how much of a balance you have left. I find that annoying, but not annoying enough to switch over to a more expensive service.

3) This is probably more of an issue of the cell phones I have used rather than the service.

I've used a Kyocera, LG Rumor Touch and then traded down intentionally to the LG Rumor 2, which is my current phone.

I wasn't happy with e-mail on any of those phones. I had to manually check to see if I had e-mail, there appeared to be no way to get notifications. Since I didn't always want to check -- I stopped using e-mail on my cell phones. That, frankly, is something I'd be better off changing. I know I would be better off if I were more reachable by e-mail -- and I'm not always near my laptop.

I know that you can currently get a Blackberry or android phone that will work on the VM network. If you are still interested in VM, I would look up those phones models at the VM web site and then look them up at phonescoop.com Maybe e-mail works better on those phones. I'm sure it does on the Blackberry.

4) I find VM's pricing structure annoying; it's not as flexible as it use to be a couple of years ago. Now you have to choose between a pre-paid and post-paid plan and, AFAIK, you can't move back and forth between them. It appears that your telephone choice is restricted depending upon what plan you want.* ("Pay-lo" vs. "Beyond-Talk"). The pre-paid plan prices is not as inexpensive as it use to be a few years ago, but I do prefer to pre-pay on cell phone plans. I've seen people get into trouble quickly on post-plaid plans because you can easily go beyond your plan's voice minutes and get charged a high price per min before being aware of it. If you never use the phone for voice calls -- that obviously won't be an issue for you -- but I would be on the lookout in case they start doing the same for text, e-mail, or data-plans in the future. They can change their pricing structure whenever they want, although they do have to notify you first.

* The reason I don't know for sure is because the customer reps I talk to don't know for sure. I could go into this but its a long boring story and I would fall asleep before I finished typing it. I'll just say I got conflicting information.

Does internet work smoothly on the phone depsite 3G service?

Can a person chose how to prepay for it? Can you pre pay for 2 months of service? Maybe 4 months of service or is there a fixed amount of time??

They have 3 pre-paid plans: The chart on how each works is here:

payLo - Pay As You Go Cell Phones and Plans | Virgin Mobile

Do you get T-Mobile in your area also? I would check out their plans also. When I was actively comparing plans a few years ago I would have gone with them if I didn't want to use the cell phone for voice calls also.

I hate t mobile with passion. My sidekick 4g freezes all the times on me.

I have always wondered if I can just pay every month, you know kind of like with apartment rent. You know.....

Hmm, might be a sidekick problem and not a T-mobile problem.

Howard Forums is also a good resource.

You can pay every month but depending upon your phone use you may be better off paying every 90 days. It is an option to write dates bills are due in a calendar after all. ;)

I have it and have a Droid now. The internet works great. I have a $25 plan, but I had it for a while and I think they now start at $35.

I just got to keep the $25 when I changed to Droid.

I believe Virgin piggybacks on the Sprint network. So anywhere Sprint works, Virgin will work. I could be wrong about this.

I've figured out a way to get unlimited texting and all the internet I need for about 27$ a month using ATT GoPhone. I hate ATT and I get delayed/missed texts all the time, but their coverage is excellent and I like that I they use SIM cards, so I can use my own unlocked phone.

correct - Virgin Mobile network is piggy-backing on Sprint Network but Sprint cellphones will not work with Virgin Mobile network and same for Virgin Mobiles on Sprint network.

Yes, Virgin uses Sprint's networks. If you want to bring a non-official phone onto Virgin, you have to make sure it supports CDMA 1900 frequencies. Any version of the Iphone 4S should work with them, only the CDMA version of the Iphone 4 will work (model a1349) that is both offered by Sprint and Verizon.

For android the list is a bit longer, but anything already on sprint's network should work 100% with Virgin. The question is if they will honor if you bring an unsupported phone. It does work, but not for everyone.

That Sidekick 4 will not work, it's a GSM phone. You can always sell it though.

People are generally dissatisfied with Sprint's internet speeds. If you don't mind slower speeds then it shouldn't bother you. Generally, GSM carriers (AT&T, T-mobile, their prepaid suppliers) have the most coverage in the US. CDMA is a little behind, but it's not bad or anything.
If you pay attention to yearly map coverage you will find what you want to know, which is why AT&T/T-mobile users can achieve higher net speeds than Verizon or Sprint, we're talking 2-5mbits/sec vs 1-2mbits/sec.

I had a brain fart yesterday -- all of VM plans are pre-paid. With most of them though you no longer get to roll forward unused minutes. (Since last summer.) However, if you go over your minutes -- of course you have to pay, and probably at a higher rate. That part of their plans didn't change. :)

When you exceed your plan's minutes, VM will charge you against your cash balance. No cash balance, no more cell phone service unless you have something in place to have a CC automatically charged.

For 25 a month with a droid I get unlimited text, unlimited threaded messaging, unlimited net, and 300 useless voice minutes unless I must use my IP relay.

No matter for rollover cause good grief, it's 25.00 bucks and you get the use of 300 minutes a month.

I have never had a billing problem. If I have a phone problem there is a live chat site or I can take the phone to the nearest Best Buy store.
I have my bill auto paid. Never, ever a problem.

Now they even have a phone with a forward and rear facing camera. It came out just a short time after I got my current phone. sigh..

Yes, it is 3 G only. Its plenty fast for me. It isn't really relevant here since our area has no 4G service at all.

Last I checked, Sprint owns Virgin so of course they do use Sprint's system.

Seriously, for the savings, this beats any Deaf Plan that I could find.

For even more savings you are able to buy used phones from VM on ebay, amazon or a friend. Make sure it has a clean ESN.

Lastly, no contract. If you don't like em, boot em. Sell your VM phone on ebay, amazon or to a friend and there - it's over. No fees, no regrets.

It is a good deal. But I still miss their text messages pack. I don't recall the prices but it was only a few dollars for hundreds of text messages that never expired.

@ LDNanna, do you use your droid for e-mail, or just text messages?

I've been thinking about going with a new cell phone and changing companies. The phone I have does not have any options for vibrate, so I never know when I have a new text unless I check it. I do not do any kind of contract phones and I was thinking after LDNanna mentioned it before about the Virgin Mobile plan. Will check into it. I have been a loyal TracFone user for the last 8-10 years.

Since LDNanna seems to be gone, I will tell you that the Virgin Droid is easy to use for email, text messages, everything..

Yes, Botti is right. (as usual! :) )

VM has two similar droids. I like the one with the real qwerty keyboard. They sell for about 90 ish?? I have seen them for less on ebay.

I have 4 email accounts. All are used on my droid. Like it a lot but sort of wished that I had waited one more week. If I had waited one week they would have had the phone with front and rear facing cameras. It would be handy for Video relay services.

@ Botts and LDNanna -- so, on the Droid phones, do you get a notification everytime you get e-mail? Or do you have to check it?
