What is attracting people to Austin, TX?

Maybe Alex knows

perhaps but since he hasn't mentioned any of it to me for the past few years... I'll assume there's no deaf-owned business establishment :(

or maybe it's because I've never asked

doesn't mean shit if there's a few deafies around unless one doesn't care if one is a lone deafie in town.

Duh, but they are still important things to deaf people--to all people--and you'll find that all the "deaf meccas," in addition to having a lot of deaf people, have all the things that Beach girl pointed out. Coincidence? I think not. I mean, why don't a bunch of Deaf people just go live in North Dakota? Same reason nobody else wants to live there. Cause it's North Dakota.

so why are deafies leaving NYC? :dunno:

That's tellin' it like it is!

Plus other reasons for leaving NYC: high cost of living, crazy traffic, high crime, congestion, etc. NYC is not everyone's idea of a fun time, especially if you are not raking in the big bucks.

The first answer for deaf people to move Austin because they are cheap.

Just take a glance at Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Austin is the most expensive city in the entire Texas. If you plan to walk around downtown like South Congress Avenue and 6th Street. You have to find the good parking lot to park your car for free. Who the hell want to pay for $5? The highest price I've seen is $12. There are lots of things to do in downtown- restaurants, local galleries, museums and the Capital building.

Austin renting is fairly expensive, but Round Rock and Pflugerville are suburbs, so they are more affordable. Oh, I love Round Rock. They're around 20 minutes away. The gang activity in Austin has been there for years, so nothing is special.

You can check the bats under the bridge if you plan to walk on South Congress Ave. They come out only when it is dusk.

Everything is big in Texas, including giant insects. I can't go anywhere without my OFF! bottle in my purse. Gotta order Avon baby oil, and it is much more effective. I don't camp in humid climate. I prefer to camp in the West.

There is a cute town called Fredericksburg, west of Austin. The charming German town that serve German meals. I heard that it is on stage 4 water restriction. :/ Texas is very drought right now.

You can drive to San Antonio within one hour if you wanna visit Sea World or Six Flags or The Alamo.

Be warned. If you have any severe allergies, Austin may not be the one for you. The pollen is extremely strong here. I've seen many new residents moving in Texas from out of states are struggling with horrible allergies for months. Grab lots of Zyrtec. :/

That is one of the reasons why we don't want to live in Texas. Our son has allergies and asthma. The heat is not good for him as well and we hate the summer heat like that...average temp in Austin is 97/73 in July compared to many cities in Sacramento and San Jacquin Valley in California around 90's high and low in the 60's. I like the cooler nights than too hot nights which require to use A/C 24/7. I prefer the west coast and the west US.
