How do you deal with a smelly co-worker?

It's so bad, I almost faint.

I always fired them...... Especially if they had to ride in my truck

btw craigm26 - "smelly"..... what do you mean?

he/she bathed in perfume/cologne? or smells like he/she showers once or twice a week? or he/she is a heavy-sweating type? or he/she eats a curry for lunch everyday?

or eat garlic every hour.

My random statement to our HR dude apparently broke a lot of agreement about personal hygiene in our gov't office. Sweet.

this one particular is an older lady, I'm not sure if it's a naturally producing odor or if it's perfume, but it reeks horribly.

Other women put on perfume right before they go talk to a manager or whatever and that's not as distracting.

Sorry.

I typed up a lightly worded statemnet that cloaked my identity and the offender. That letter was placed in the chair of the HR representative. He picked up it up and a trusted colleague informed me that the chatter went up about personal hygiene issues. So it appears that the issue is being taken up immediately. Hopefully, the offender changes their behaviour.

Gotcha, sorry for the inconvenience......wait n' see now, I guess?

no inconvenience here...sometimes my writing is sloppy when I'm not really concentrating that hard.

seriously :).

Spray frebreeze on him/her? LOL

I remember a lady at work that seemed to practically bathe in perfume every Friday....just on Friday!....My guess she was going out after work or something....or just didn't take a bath until Saturday...I dunno which. But it became so bad! My allergies were terrible, so I did complain to my supervisor about the odor, and he informed everybody not to wear perfume or heavy after shave (cologne) to work because people do have allergies.....
The smell was awful!

With tact; inform the person his offensive odour is overwhelming his co-workers. It's best done in private as the person may not be aware of this "extra body odour."

yep. it is a tricky situation to deal with because if handled improperly, the employee has crystal-clear ground to sue for discrimination, ADA violation, or Civil Rights violation.

They can address it to her that her body odor is bothering other people but they cannot ask for the cause of odor.

Yeah, that's right; don't ask, don't......oops that's something else. *ducking*
