I can speak for my hubby's family..they dont find racism funny and the KKK represented a very very ugly past. They dont want any reminders of it, I guess.

Like I said, the slaves used to say "yessir, massa" as if they agreed. There are those blacks that won't raise a stink about something like this in public because they simply refuse to lower themselves to the same position the one making light of a very serious subject has. That doesn't mean they find it funny or amusing in any way. It means that they go along with it, and then, in private, talk about the insensitivity of whites to the history of oppression the black man has experienced in this country. In fact, I know several blacks, many in my family, that would treat such an incident is one that is so ignorant and presupposing that it is to be expected from the white who claims to have "not a racist bone in their body" but exhibits exactly the oppostive through their insensitivity.

Yes I am sure there are many people like that. This was done as a joke at a party and it was taken as a joke so all was good. Like I say....people are different. You should hear some of the jokes they played on me with my deafness. Many might consider them mean....I thought they were funny. To give you an idea.....After big softball tournaments there is an awards ceremony. When my name is called out for MVP or All tournament they have to let me know since I can't hear the speaker. Well, one year at the World tournament (Black World in fact) they nodded to let me know I had won MVP.....pretty embarrassing when I got to the podium at the same time as the person who's name was called. I looked out and my team was :laugh2::laugh2::laugh2: But then so was I. I guess some might have been upset. To me it was a good gag (one of many) and I appreciate a good gag. Again, everybody is different. To me life is more fun when you don't take things (or yourself) too seriously. BTW I also won MVP at Black World the very next year. :)

:gpost:.....I love a good laugh...and we joke in our home all the time, never taking things seriously....unless they are serious. So, instead of walking around on "tip-toes", or "egg shells", worring about offending someone...if it does, then I'll apologize. But I'm not gonna break my neck or bend over backwards with the apology....if someone can't take a joke.

I'd rather be the brunt of a "funny joke" with no harm intended, than a barrage of insults! People that are constantly "insulting" are just feeding their own egos.....I don't think this teacher meant any harm!

Just for the record, my question about Nazi uniforms was sarcastic. I did not intend for someone to consider wearing Nazi apparel. I'm disturbed that anyone would take it that way.

Symbols of violent racists are never funny. Not in any context.

Great story, don't really think it's comparable to the KKK.

I love joking around but I stick to myself, not others. I make blind jokes and tranny jokes and jokes that only target me cause I don't know what will offend other people. I wouldn't make a joke about black people, much less the KKK, unless I know the people in the room well enough to know what they find funny, what they don't, and where they draw the line. For example, in my family, we have an on going joke that I think I'm black but don't know better cause I'm blind (since I'm the only white person in the household). But that's an ongoing joke we have between ourselves, which is different from walking into a room where you might not know everyone and making a KKK joke.

Maybe it works with your friends but for a lot of people making a KKK joke would be taking it too far. Take deafness. Joking about deafness is one thing but joking about how deaf people got the bottom of their tongues sliced off is another.

Yeah, I've seen it happen several times. That is why I asked the question. To point out that if you want sensitive treatment from others, then you must also be willing to grant it to others. Treat others with insensitivity, and you have no room to complain.
