So I;ve seen several of these "Ask me anything" threads and I thought I would offer myself as well.

I am a hearing mother of a Deaf 5 year old with a CI.

Feel free to ask anything from my favorite color to the last book I read to how on earth I ended up here at AD.

I'll answer anything.

How did you find out your daughter was deaf?

We started doing "baby signs" with her at 12 months. When she was 18 months old she hadn't gained any words and she had stopped voicing with her signs. I asked the pediatrician if this was normal. He said it was fine, and we should just wait and see. I ignored him and called Early Intervention. They asked if I had her hearing tested and I said yes, twice. They told me to get it checked again. I did, and she failed. She had a moderately-severe loss. It is progressive, so now she is severe-profound.

How old is she?

Do you have any other kids?

Nope and we never will. We had a terrible birth experience that led to Miss Kat needing a heart-lung bypass and being near death. We don't want to ever have to go through that sort of thing again. Plus, we don't want a hearing child. We fear it would make us lazy and lead to her being left out of our family. So, we chose to focus all our whole world on her.

Wow! Very interesting perspective. My mom said that if she had knew my brother was going to be deaf, she wouldnt have tried for him cuz my deafness was devastating for her. In my view, I am glad she had my brother cuz I wouldhave been the only deaf one in my whole family , both immediate and extended. Miss Kat is blessed!

What do u do for a living? *if too personal, dont have to answer. :)*

Are you still mad at me from the fight we had a few months ago?

Ah, now you have found the subject that will embarrass me! I have the music tastes of a 14 year old emo girl! I love My Chemical Romance

Keep that to PMs.. There's a younger audience around here.

Do you have to deal with other kids messing with Kat?

Not yet. She goes to a Deaf school, so the kids get along really well. She has not ever been teased, at least not yet. Some of the kids ask about her CI and we just explain it.
