17-year-olds can vote in SC GOP primary

Quote:
Many 17 year olds can vote in the January 21, 2012 SC Primary

South Carolina is one of few states where youth can vote in a preceding primary election as long as they will be 18 years old by the next Election Day. Any citizen of SC who will be 18 on or before November 6, 2012 is eligible to vote in party primaries beginning here on January 21, 2012.

The first step to accomplish this is voter registration. The League of Women Voters of the Charleston Area, in partnership with the Charleston Board of Elections and Voter Registration, is bringing bring voter registration to high schools between November 9 and December 21 (anticipated date 30 days before first president primary). To date, over 500 new voters have been registered locally though the schools. This has been coordinated with the Charleston and Berkeley County School districts. This effort is supported [in part] by a grant from the League of Women Voters Education Fund.

The opportunity to engage young people on the path of responsible citizenship is one not to be missed. Voting is a habit. A 2004 paper that analyzed the results of eight field experiments found that a person who votes in one election is 29 percentage points more likely to vote in the next major election.

In the 2008 election, fewer than 50 percent of those ages 18-24 self-reported casting a ballot. SC young voters will have at least 3 chances next year to significantly effect the outcomes of state and national elections.
