IMMIGRANTS, NOT LOCALS, MUST ADAPT. Take It Or Leave It. We are tired of this nation worrying about whether we are offending some individual or their culture and what they might do on the excuse of retaliation. Since the conquest and rape, island by island, of Oceania, we have experienced a surge in fear that you would one day come here.
This culture has been developed over FOUR HUNDRED CENTURIES of struggles, trials and develpments by millions of men and women who have sought peaceful lives. We speak many languages, not just English, so if you want local knowledge, learn the local language! Most of us believe in the Earth, because it is the Earth which has nurtured and sustained us, and sometimes chastened us if we did not respect it. This is not documented, because ours is a living nation whose valued are passed by word of mouth, parent to child, along with milk and lullabies, we do not hand our culture to the keeping of the ones who can write. It is certainly appropriate to venerate the Earth that is beyond the walls of your schools. If the Earth offends you, then we suggest you consider staying on your boats until you have had time to think better of it. Because the Earth is all of our culture. We will accept your beliefs, and will not question why. All we ask is that you accept ours, and live in harmony and peaceful enjoyment with us and the Earth. This is OUR NATION upon the EARTH's LAND, it is OUR LIFESTYLE, and we will allow you every opportunity to enjoy all this. But once you are done complaining, whining, and griping about our languages, our values, our refusal to exploit the earth at any cost, before you begin to slaughter us, we highly encourage you take advantage of an opportunity you must feel our forefathers missed, and LEAVE. If you aren't happy here then LEAVE. We didn't force you to come here. We didn't invite you here. You pressed on and on until you came here. So accept the nation upon the land you found.

No, that reinforces the melting pot philosophy. As new immigrants (ingredients) arrive (are added to the melting pot), their uniqueness (flavor) is blended into the existing culture (stew). They add spice to the stew but they don't stand out of or take over the stew. The stew maintains its basic character with all the new ingredients blended in.

in America - every immigrant's "ingredient" is added to the melting pot. That's why English is not an official language in here.

Melting pot of language means that English is the base and the immigrants add seasonings. Our business and government documents, for example, should be in English. Our daily conversations should be in English, seasoned with words and phrases from other languages but still English. Also, it doesn't mean that people can't be bi- or multi-lingual, as long as one of those languages is English. |

Neither. Until a federal government and borders were established, there was no United States, no melting pot. When that was done, the majority language in use for government and commerce was American English. That became the "pot." As more people immigrated to the United States, they learned English and added flavorings of their native tongues.

If Spanish-speaking people move to the United States for permanent residence, then they should learn English just like the Germans, Russians, Poles, Chinese, Portuguese, etc., did before them. |

I didn't see anything that said immigrants had to convert to Christianity. The writer said that immigrants coming to a nation where Christianity is widespread shouldn't expect all signs of Christianity to be hidden or removed for them. |

Just go to any Chinatown, Little Italy, etc., you will find that people aren't speaking just English. However, people should not be in fear of English vanishing. Although it is always evolving even as we speak. It should be noted English today is not the same English people spoke a hundred years ago. In fact, a lot of words in English are French, Latin, etc. It's just amusing to see how people get all worked up over a spoken language. Hee. |

in Mexico, it is the law there that any foreigners who want to work must speak and write Spanish. Same thing to be a citizen of Mexico or Japan, one must know Spanish or Japanese. Is that legal????
Jiro, have you ever been to any fast-foods places where a worker behind the counter CAN read your written order?? |

Sharia law goes against absolutely everything that is American. It is the antithesis of the American dream. Sane Muslims are welcome (and as far as I'm concerned, invited) to come and make their contributions to American society. However, the fact that we're the melting pot does not mean we have to sit idly by while crazies try to impose sharia law. Fortunately, most of our Muslims are sane, so the imposition of sharia law isn't any danger now. However, the same can't be said for Europe. Their leaders have pretty much figured out that multiculturalism (which is the opposite of the melting pot) is garbage.
