Someone mentioned the unrest was due to Wikileaks.

How are they able to cut off the Internet?

Egypt unrest

Egypt is one of those countries where the middle class, the working poor, outnumber the rest. They earn apprx 28 cents a day . they live in filth with dirty water and and little sanitation to speak of. The citizens have taken to the street and it seems the only way to get some peoples attention is thru demonstrations and violence, which I do not condone. But how long are they expected to watch their children die. What we see happening there is another part of the world where the rich attain wealth and position thru your connections, You see the guns , the guards and when supplies do make their way thru they are pilfered by the soldiers and littloe makes it to the ppl it was intended for. Egypt , has been raped and it's "marvels" squandered.
I am always shocked when the press and goverment act shocked that the ppl they are supressing try to regain some dignity. I wonder how much longer they can survive?? and then there are the "poor" who can only manage to wake up each morning, hoping to find their children have lived thru another night, with insect bites and maleria from the filth and aids, spreading quickly.
I am saddened to see what id happening but not surprised , there is more to come in other countries as well. I have always been intriged by Egypt and wanted to travel there one day. I am afraid now I shall never see her and If I did she would be a shadow of the Country she was. There once was a chance for peace, if you remember. a man of honor tried to start talks, he was assasinated, something that did not even surprise his family. I am saddened and sickened by this and so many of the things I see happening around the world today, cutting off the ability to communicate only what they wish to be seen and heard is a typical step in the overthrow of any goverment...I will meditate and pray for those ppl that are suffering today as they did yesterday and will tomorrow, should they survive. Cut off cable services.

A few dial up and satellite users are getting thru but the bulk of users who use any kind of cable are cut off.

How are they able to cut off the Internet?

To put it in a simple man's terms...

Everything on the internet is IP based. But in order to go to a site, ie: google.com.. your ISP has a DNS server that tells your computer where to go. Think of it as a big address book telling you where to go from a domain name to a IP address.

Take that out, which is not too hard, and all the computers don't know where to go.

There are some other things they did on top of this im sure.

Such a riot can never happen in the USA because if the internet was cut off we would be too busy calling the carriers.

Did he mention where he got the information?
It was a she, but another friend said he was going to Google it and see what he could find. I will check and if he found anything I will post it back in this thread.

ok. :)

Yes, such governments could freeze the ISPs quite easy if not totally for the most cases yet.

There were several posters who debated about it somewhere in this forum several months ago. Those ones (most of them) thought it's impossible for Obama to do it in case of emergency (threat of national security or the sorts like). Now those ones ought to realize that any government can do it quite easy even no matter if they think it cannot happen or will not happen. Well, it can be done as evidenced in Egypt and Iran.

Whether or not other governments—for example, the U.S. government — are able to shut down the Internet is "a regulatory question," said Clark. "In a time of crisis, does a government have the powers to compel the ISPs to take such an action?" In the U.S., the answer is no — not only does President Obama, or any president, not have access to a physical "switch" that turns off the Internet, he also has no control over ISPs.

That could change, however, if the "Protecting Cyberspace as a National Asset" bill, introduced in the Senate last summer, ever passes. The bill would effectively give the president an Internet kill-switch to be used in cases of national cyberemergency, which presumably would stall the operation of this country's ISPs. Rather than blocking free-speech, the bill is intended to protect the economic infrastructure from cyberterrorists; still, it has many free-speech advocates worried — especially in light of the recent turn of events in Egypt.
