Now I understand why many of my friends are joining the "Against 'Draw Muhammad Day'" group on Facebook.

Anyone who joins, "against drawings" is against freedom of speech, pure and simple.

Not really. They're using free speech to express their dissent.

Besides, the concept of free speech only apply to political affairs. Facebook is not a political entity; it's a business entlty.

Even the political cartoonists in muslim countries have mocked and/or insulted Christians and Jews. What do we do? Nothing as we go about our business.

Furthermore, if the concept of free speech is applied to businesses, we would have no moderators on any websites; that includes social networks, forums, blogs, video sites and so on.

That's because Canada and the States don't have an official religion.

Wow we agree on two things at the same time.....Hope we don't throw earth off it's axis.

It goes like this. Facebook starts because they're a "business entity" and don't want to lose potential subscribers so they ban any Momo drawings.

Then it gravitates to Blogger.com, owned by Google, they ban blog site that carry such drawings since it against their "policy" on hate or "hate" in this matter.

Then it gravitates to the dot.coms such as paid blog sites or even websites because the hosting site owners don't want "hate" on their servers so they issue a ban on such drawings and will nix contracts on websites deemed "hateful" towards certain groups, namely certain religious groups perhaps.

So, where does the freedom of speech ends with a "business entity?" If Facebook bans such a thing then guess who won and won't stop and aim for similar sites to get them to stop through coercion, hate, threats, court lawsuits, etc..?

I thought you support "free market" principles?

Don't like it? Demand the owners to revert the policy. Too many people disagreeing with you? Switch services. Can't find the service you need? Start your own. Can't find someone to host your service? Switch host. Or start your own. Oh, someone is preventing you from hosting your own service? Time to talk to your representative to break corporate holds on small businesses.

Besides, I highly doubt Facebook will ban pictures of Muhammand. There is over 400 million people registered. If they ban the images, people will threaten to boycott Facebook. What is more likely to happen is that Facebook will discontinue promotions of the "special day."

Kokonut,

Facebook isn't banning anything at the moment. Pakistan Court is banning Facebook because of the drawings.

At least that is what I understand from reading the OP.

Facebook really should take that page down. It is a religious issue, and we do have Americans who are Muslims, that may be offended by it too.

Also in the article, it's a temporary crowd control response after Pakistani citizens sacked their own country in 2006.

The ban is only until May 31st.

Yup, it is.

I'm realized that many Muslims got offended by drawing or displaying of Mohammed but what's up with freedom of speech? If someone is drawing the picture of Jesus but do Christians got offended too?

You missed the point of it going down the line starting with Facebook should it ever, god forbid, start out that way.

Unfortunately this is apples to oranges because the Qur'an specifies not to depict Muhammad whereas the Bible says nothing about depicting Jesus. Walk into any church and you'll see Jesus everywhere. Walk into any mosque and you won't see Muhammad anywhere.

Oh interesting, thanks for answering my question.

I didn't miss the point. You underestimated the power of consumerism. Well, I suppose not, but you're not giving consumerists enough credits.
