As for the reason why, anyone will tell you that someone who gets a high or can't function without something is addicted to it. That's why the article is titled "Abortion addict." She was addicted to the prospect of motherhood and since she didn't actually want to land herself IN motherhood, she aborted her baby. She explains very openly and honestly the feelings behind her actions. I suggest rereading the article.
I already read it. Since abortion is tied to this story, it looks more like an issue on having too many abortions as the actual concern than not. But that's just me.

Well, I didn't know about what she had done until right before she got kicked out of school.

Yeah, that's pretty much the reason why RIT couldn't really do anything. RIT didn't know about it. Even if they did, they probably couldn't do anything if she didn't admit to having the problem. What they probably could do was refer her to someone for help, then it would be up to her whether she seeks that help or not.

So, it's the "addiction" that's the underlying problem? In otherwords, she should have had only 1 or 2 abortions, and it wouldn't have been a mental issue then? Everything in moderation?

there's really no point in continuing this. everything's being repeated in slightly different words.

I think you are blinded by the word "abortion" and you personal stance regarding such. The article is not about abortions, and the author made that clear in the article.

Read again. And this time apply comprehension and objectivity. Read all the words, not just the ones you think are important.

How could anyone not be "blinded" by the word abortion....since there were "15 of them."? Excessive.....Even tho' she "might" have mental illness, still she aborted 15 times....then after she "got well" had 2 live births....Since there is no law regarding how many abortions a woman can have, I still feel that if she was/is truly "mentally ill", wouldn't anybody be "concerned" about her 2 living children?

Abortion is a personal choice. I do feel sorry for this woman in some ways. But then again, I feel repulsion!

drinking beer is legal. drinking excessively on daily basis is legal as well (assuming he/she does it at home) but don't you think that means this person needs to seek counseling help?

I thought the same thing, because remember the story of Andrea Yates drowned her 5 children, she had suffered postpartum depression and psychosis for years. I would be very concerned of the two living children that this woman have right now, and they're small children.

It is called bias. When one is that ensconced in their own bias, they fail to look at the fact objectively and realistically. The also tend to become extremely judgemental of extraneous factors.

Mentally ill peple do recover to the degree that they function well in society. The fact that you refuse to acknowledge that is simply evidence of your own bias and judgemental attitude.

Just don't be surprised when that judgemental attitude bites you in the butt. When you judge others this harshly, you are subject to being judged harshly yourself. And I have no doubt that when it happens, you will be the first one to scream, "Foul!"

That is a very different case, and a very different diagnosis. You cannot compare the two.

Anyone who suffered mental illness without proper treatments should be supervise around small children. You should know that if you're a psychiatrist?

The woman in the article has received treatment. And you still cannot compare her disorder to Andrea Yates' disorder. Two completely different cases, two completely different disorders, two completely differerent prognoses, two completely different manifestations.

Cheri, are you counting people with depression in that statement? If so, I very much disagree.

I don't like how this thread is turning into bash the mentally ill. Besides lacking compassion, it's ignorance.

Me neither. IMHO, the 'Abortion Addict' has/had a mental illness/mental issues, which manifested themselves with her through multiple, deliberate abortions. Other people's issues may manifest themselves through alcoholism, eating disorders, compulsive gambling- it could be anything, and it's never about the alcohol, or the food, or the money- it's not to be taken at face value.

Very well said, melissa! I applaud you. You have developed quite a bit of insight.

Me think Abortion Addict means someone who loves being pregnant but don't want to have children.

That would be more someone who fakes a pregnancy. The woman in this article has some deep seated issues. More closely related to a PTSD sufferer.

She may have felt that she would be betraying her mother by having children. A survivor's guilt kind of thing. Maybe she didn't believe that she deserved to have children. Whatever it was, I hope that she's doing better.
