Hey all, I'm "new" here. Was a member of this forum in 2001-200... 3? Then I departed for other avenues.

Now I'm back, with a video I made.
It shows the flaws in the American system of facing Deaf people:
[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lpXy-UI-o4w&fmt=18]YouTube - You neutral?[/ame]

Now that Barack Obama is our President-elect, he has some things on his agenda that you would be VERY interested in as deaf American citizens.

1. His top disability policy advisor is Tom Harkin. Harkin wrote and sponsored the ADA. Tom's brother is deaf and quite intelligent. Tom feels the ADA isn't enough. It was Tom who wrote up the four bulletpoints, the four priorities for Obama's disability page (Barack Obama and Joe Biden: The Change We Need | Disabilities , see bottom).

2. Apparently Obama knows sign language, Enough to carry on a basic conversation. See the 2nd half of this Jack's Eyes Vlog: [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p1WD-Qf1mqg]YouTube - FDR and Obama[/ame]

So.... Regardless of your political alignment, we deaf people need to get together and show the incoming Obama Administration what is wrong with how America treats and manages its deaf citizens.

I believe that visual (sign) language is equal to verbal language. Both have their pros and cons. Both are equally powerful and beautiful in expressing meaning.

I believe that deaf people are more than just "disabled" people. We have language and culture, a big difference from other forms of disability. We cannot just be "bunched" with other forms of disability under the same umbrella.

Unfortunately, the world does not know nor believe the above two points.

I believe that our time is now to preserve our Deaf heritage and unique language and make the world better for ourselves and future generations of Deaf people -

- we have a President-elect that is open and intelligent. He's not dumb. He apparently knows sign. He has a cool disability advisor.

So are you gonna let Obama be another "ordinary" President?

Or would you help us push Obama into being an extraordinary President for us Deaf people?

Help out! Email people on the Obama team. See the following link for an example of how to do this: ReunifyGally

Let your Deaf friends and families know. We can't just let the Obama Administration go to waste through apathy. We need to let the Obama Administration know that we're watching them. We need to have deeper discussion on how to resolve how America treats its Deaf citizens.

From what I see it, there are three general directions in which the Deaf community in America is going. See the picture I attached below... just for discussion's sake :)

And people tried to say that persons with disabilities would suffer under the Obama administration!:cool2:

Too bad I can't see the video. I would have liked to see what this person felt about the Obama Administration. Oh well.

That's interesting. I really need to go college to earn the degree. Because I am disability.

I don't know if Obama know sign language. Why don't deaf people bring a camcorder to make a video? Can you proof it? I know Obama know sign ILY. No video to see Obama's sign said :deaf:. :dunno:

I am sorry to say this but that girl (in video) who said, "art" after Obama asked her what deaf people need is an embarrassment to the Deaf community.

What Deaf people really need are two things: EDUCATION and ACCESSIBILTY! Art? What a joke!

netrox,

What were some of the things this girl said? I'm curious.

Pinky, what do you mean by, "I am disability"?

In that video, the girl was describing her meeting with Obama and Obama asked the deaf girl, "What do deaf people need?" and she admitted she doesn't know what the deaf community needs then she said, "I need art."

Need art? We got construction papers and crayons for ya! *sarcasm*

Thanks for your reply, netrox.

She actually said that? Oh brother.

Yeah, I imagine Obama thinking, "deaf people need art?"

Hear Again,

Without taking the time to do a word for word transcript, I'm going to break down the crux of the video for you. I skipped the intro section for the sake of time.

First section: Mainstream Education

Man enters business, writes on a piece of paper, and hands it to the receptionist. She is on the phone. She reads what he has written, shakes her head "No." and continues on the phone. He looks confused and points at something. She again shakes her head "No." He gestures for her to pay attention, and points again. She stands up to escort him from the room. He stops by a sign that says, "Help Wanted." The caption in the next frame reads "Should you care?"

Second section: Oral education

A girl approaches a group of signers in a restaurant/bar. She indicates that she is deaf. One of the signers attempts to communicate with her in sign. The orally educated girl obviously does not understand. This exchange continues with both trying to communicate with the other. Unable to bridge the gap, the signing woman goes back to chatting with her friends, and the oral deaf girl wanders off. She then approaches two hearing people. The same problems with communication occur. The oral deaf girl eventually gives up and wanders outside, where she signs, "Its not fair!" The caption in the next frame reads, "A Common Barrier."

Third section: Educated at a Deaf School

Deaf girl is sitting in a college classroom looking at an essay. She lays it on the desk looking frustrated. Camera focuses on paper, and it says "A+. Good Work" written on the top of the essay. A hearing friend approaches and they greet each other in sign. Deaf girl asks hearing girl her grade. Hearing girl replies that she received a "B". Deaf girl looks puzzled, and signs that she received an "A". Hearing girl sits down next to her and they look at the deaf girl's essay. The expression on her face shows that she sees mistakes on the deaf girl's essay that were not marked wrong. Hearing girl appears uncomfortable, signs that it is time for her to go. Signs, "See you later." Deaf girl looks at her own essay with frustration. She signs, "I want to learn. I don't understand what happened."

Following captions appear in the final frames:

A Dishonest System
Let's Unite
Show Obama
Why him?
Barak Obama's plan
Better education, end discrimination, increase employment, support independence

The final frame is an illustration of the name sign for Obama using the "o" and "b" handshapes in the change sign.

Hope that helps.

Yes, it does. Thanks for taking the time to describe the video, Jillio. :)
