Obama, Biden, McCain, Palin on Animal Issues

MCCAIN
“McCain co-sponsored new legislation to stop horse slaughter, backed a bill to stop the shipment of live birds between states for the only purpose of cockfighting, supported a bill to stop the killing of bears by ending trade in their gall bladders and other viscera and organs.

“Senator McCain also took a position against the fur industry, by voting to eliminate a $2 million subsidy for the mink industry. And he voted against allowing drilling for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, saving the thousands of animals who lived there.

“He earned scores of up to 75 percent on the Humane Scorecard”

OBAMA
“Obama added that he sponsored a bill to prevent horse slaughter in the Illinois state Senate and had been repeatedly endorsed by the Humane Society. ‘I think how we treat our animals reflects how we treat each other,’ he said. ‘And it’s very important that we have a president who is mindful of the cruelty that is perpetrated on animals.’”

“... He has co-sponsored new legislation to stop horse slaughter and export of horses for human consumption, to upgrade federal penalties for dogfighting and cockfighting, to ban possession of fighting dogs and being a spectator at a dogfight. He also signed a letter requesting increased funds for enforcement of the Animal Welfare Act, Humane Methods of Slaughter Act, and federal animal fighting law. Sent letter to National Zoo expressing concern for the care of Toni the elephant."

As what she said that she fears by "attacks" then her career as VP is not right for her.

Yeah..I noticed that. I dont even want to think about abortion cause its too much a hot-potato issue. It's too complicated for me to even comprehend it.

First of all, there's no need to shout at me. Please turn your caps lock off.

Second, I don't care if Palin has a license to kill moose and wolves. It's wrong. Period.

I'm very sorry about your friend who has a brain injury, but that still doesn't change my mind about Palin.

Exactly. Those who oppose animal research have yet tocome up with a viable alternative. Is it more humane to experiment on people, or to allow people to die because we have not experiemented with treatments at all?

I personally dislike the idea that animals are experimented upon and I am hoping that an alternative will be found someday that doesn't involve spraying perfume into the eyes of innocent animals, many of which we would call our companions if we could.

Testing cosmetics and testing medical treatments are 2 different situations.

Not to me they aren't. Testing drugs on animals only means testing drugs on humans later on. Their are lots of more up to date methods.

We need humanity in research. Otherwise what's to stop them testing on humans too.

Oh I see. You don't want ANY testing at all? Human nor animal? Is this what you're saying?

You're saying you want research to be limited to only number crunching and computer simulations? Just trying to clarify.

Adult stem cells from Volunteers ok or from abigol cord of live babies. Computer based modelling ok, observing cases ok. So it's just animal, embroyotic or animal/human hybrid research that I don't like. It does leave a lot of other options. Besides which humans and animals are differant. What works with a human doesn't always work with another species and visa versa. So we have to test on humans eventually anyway. Sometimes this has very bad results.

Macain says that he wants ethnics in research although he's refering to not testing on live embroyo's I think. I read this on his website. I don't really know his views on animal based research as he doesn't give it a mention.

just so you understand - computer-based modeling is based on data collected from real-life testing. Even a world super-genius person cannot even figure out how to create a computer simulation without any data.

So basically - if you support computer-based modeling, you are indirectly supporting live testing.

What exactly would those methods be, dreama? To date, I know of no methods of medical research that does not require live testing. And cosmetics do not save lives. Medications do. Yes, we do need humanity in research. That is why we test on animals and not on people.

There it is! Live testing is necessary to design the simulation.

uh... we do have humanity in research. that's why we have a stringent ethic standard... even for animals. something that you don't see in most of countries. That's what stopping us from testing on humans like what Nazi did. Beside... we do test it on humans.... in a very safe, ethical way. Do you want us to be like Nazi?

We first test it on animals... if proven safe... then it's proceeded to clinical trials on humans.... then it's ready to sell.
