The US Army is using PS3 controllers for their SUGV’s

Opppps! I mean, Army using Xbox 360 controllers for SUGVs! Ha

Here's a creative use of gaming technology. The U.S. Army appears to be utilizing Xbox 360 controllers to pilot their Small Unmanned Ground Vehicles (SUGVs). SUGVs are miniature vehicles, many of which are equipped with cameras that allow troops to explore areas that are either too dangerous, or too inaccessible for human soldiers to access. This seems like a pretty brilliant move, given the 20-something age of most infantry members, and the concurrent familiarity with gaming technology that is so prevalent within that demographic. There's no official word from the Army on this, but it's no stretch to imagine a Microsoft gaming division contract buried somewhere inside of our massive defense budget.

This is awesome.

Pretty soon, the controller will become a household thing where people use it to open and close garage doors, set their car alarms, control RC cars, etc.

Never heard of the DARPA challenge? It's great. Real cars are given robot drivers, and they race. Winner is covered in artificial, robotic glory. This year one of the leading contenders in the challenge is Axion Racing's Spirit, pictured above. And the gaming relevance? Why, it's "eyes" are a PS3. Running Linux, the PS3 is responsible for "realtime stereoscopic sensor data", reading terrain info sent from cameras attached to the car's underbelly. No word on whether it's also responsible for "gathering dust" and/or "firmware updates", but we'll keep you posted! You can find out more about DARPA and Axion Racing after the, *ahem*, jump.
