DVD NEWS: Reefer Madness

Just when you thought it was safe to light up a fatty...

20th Century Fox has announced a definitive edition of cult favorite Reefer Madness. Originally released in 1938 as propaganda to scare America's youth off of the "demon weed," this quintessential landmark comes with a newly restored B&W transfer along with an all-new colorized version. Audio-wise, look for newly created Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS tracks (no foolin') and original mono. Extras include an audio commentary with Mystery Science Theater 3000's Mike Nelson, a second track with the Legend Films color design team, the short film "Grandpa's Marijuana Handbook" and an original trailer.

Retail is $14.98. Reefer Madness is due - when else - on 4/20.

Oh god...what a tastless way to go with this one. As a regular user of cannabis, I haven't had much problem with using 420. Although, I realise it does induce psychosis and paranoia in some people, but not everyone is affected like that.
I reckon it also depends on whether people smoked cannabis by itself or mixed it with other types of drugs such as crack cocaine (called primo smoke) -- THAT sort of mixture DOES induce psychosis, paranoia and hallunciations in some people.

Yes, but does it have captioning or subtitles?
DVD's are better than videos at this, but 'restorations' of old films often don't have any captioning added. =(

Yeah, that's one minor disadvantages of re-releases of old videos on DVD. Sometimes, you might get lucky and it's captioned/subtitled. You might even get more lucky if they re-release the re-released version of a old video to DVD... cuz they improve the sound/picture quality and add subtitles/captions in the process.

For instance, I recently rented Evil Dead 2. This version was the THX version. This DVD was originally released in the same format as the VHS version... without captions. They then improved the sound quality of the movie and re-released it again as a THX version. That's when they added the captions. Finally, I get to see that damn movie with captions!

My boyfriend bought Reefer Madness and Assassin of Youth (which is just like Reefer Madness) for $7 each. He knows it doesn't have subtitles but he bought it anyway, for that price and for the content, it sounds funny.

As for the Evil Dead, I have the Book of the Dead Edition which has closed captioning but no subtitles, and I saw Evil Dead 3 with subtitles. I haven't seen the 2nd one yet.

Gone With The Wind is another example of a re-release. I wish they'd re-release everything though, even if it's only closed captioning.

Bree - "Reefer Madness: The Special Addiction", which is to be released by FOX on 4-20 has CC as do all Legend Films' feature film DVDs.
