Yeah, good idea. I got some time to research, though. My mom grew up in Berkeley in her teenager and early adult years before she had me.

I go to city-data.com forums to research on cities to live and their point of views. It is a very active forum. Lot of people come there to ask what cities to suggest to live in before moving there or something like that.

It would be a great idea to find work here before moving . We have one of the highest unemployment rates in the country right now, and they say it won't improve anytime soon. Good luck on the move. BTW ain't nothin wrong with So. Cal lived there all my life.

Antioch, Discovery Bay, Tracy, Stockton are cheaper to live, but high crime area.

Bay Area are not always expensive, there are plenty of $700/1 bedroom in really good areas here I can find easily. THE LAPHAM COMPANY - Serving Bay Area Renters & Property Owners Since 1911

California has been changed a lot.

If you want to live in far Northern CA (SF and Sac don't count). I was born in a tiny town near Burney and grew up in a different town which is 80 miles away from Reno. Prepare for 90s degree during the summers, annoying deers crashing into the wall of the houses and buildings, and keep that small bears out of your trashes. Some houses came with private wells. Can't stand fog. Get tire chains for winter seasons. Love Lake Tahoe and National Parks like Lassen and Burney falls. Redding, and Susanville are kinda of isolated. Eureka is pretty and charming, but many homes are old. As far as I know that Fresno and Modesto are cheap. The pollen in Fresno is awful.

If you own any "older" Asian car like Honda and Nissan, sell it. If you don't want to sell your car, get a garage to guard your Asian car. Older Asian cars are popular for car thieves. My bro's former Nissan car was broken into a few times in Fresno. His friends are frustrated with the same problems in Sac, Modesto, and Stockton. My niece's Honda car was broken into, and they took her Mac laptop. I used to have Honda car, and always kept it in the garage. Had never any problem with it.

My friend and her husband just moved back to CA. Their condo rent costs over almost $2,000/month. Dublin is a young city, and is still growing. They prefer to live in a large deaf community. It is one of the reasons they moved back from Texas.

I have to agree with another member about California's economy being really bad right now. On of my friends tried to move to California last month but had to move back to Baltimore because of no jobs but then again, she was looking for a job as a photographer in the modeling industry. Another friend of mine got a job easily at the deaf school in Riverside so I guess it all depends on what kind of job you are looking for. Good luck!

I bet Whitethorn is not the same! There was only one small country store that sold gas. And I think they had a may had been a one pay phone in town. You could buy an acres of land for $ 50.00 when I lived there in the 70's! I sure which I had brought a few acres then!

It depends on the job you are looking for, of course. It also depends on their job history as well. I won't have a much of a problem when I transfer my job over there and get a 2nd job.

It didn't change a lot from what you have explained. That is California from what it sounds like. . I've always driven Hondas and lived in California and never had an issue...probably because I lived in a low crime area or I had good luck, I don't know. Dublin is an expensive place, obviously.

@Seq.....as another poster said make sure you have a job first. Statewide unemployment is at 11.7% this month and the rural areas are worse. Things are pretty bad here right now and taxes are going up.

Disagreed. Fremont rent prices are ridiculous. You can't find one bedroom under $1k in Fremont.

curious - what's "cheap" to you?

btw - my friend's surviving Oakland just fine... probably cuz she's helping them from legal injustice

Yes, Lake Merritt, Piedmont, Grand Ave, and Jack London are very nice area in Oakland. I go there many times, and I never had any hesitation to walk during night times.

well I've never bought a house or rented one but apartments here range from $595-$1,000. I pay $775 for a 2 bed one bath apartment in a nice neighborhood. Just depends what part of Modesto you want to live in.

Fremont is not cheap.....just cheaper than most areas here. Everything on the west side is much higher.

As for Oakland....good luck to your friend. I wouldn't recommend it though.

But then again I saw cops with guns drawn on Market St in SF today.....Only a block away from Westfield.....so maybe no place is safe anymore.

Up to around 1,000 a month for 3 bedroom rental. You wont find that in good areas in major cities.

Where is the lowest unemployment rate in California? There are always lowest and highest rates. Iowa is only 6.8% which is ironic. I guess it has to be the different economy. Its probably the food industry and financial companies which people will always starve for.

I grew up in Oakland in early 1980s as a child. Most of the crime is in East Oakland and some of West Oakland too. Good areas in Piedmont, Oakland Hills, downtown, etc. The gangs fight with each other in East Oakland. Many differenr gangs.

I'm not getting why California has higher unemployment while states in harsh climates have better job growth. North and South Dakota has one of the lowest.
