An emerging model in sustainable tourism can be seen in Kerala, the ‘God’s Own Country’. Many of the tourism destinations in the third world are facing many problems due to lack of planning and the lack of concern for the environment. The self-destructive practices followed in those destinations have resulted in their total disappearance from the world tourism map. Even in such a situation, the Kerala tourism development model is a glaring example for sustainable tourism. This is due to the fact that the public awareness about the importance of preserving the environment is rather high.

In Kerala holiday packages offer immense options for people with any taste or preference. The traditional art and architectural patterns that merge with their immediate environments enjoy predominance over other design patterns. The traditional design styles never alter the immediate environment. The holiday packages will not only take you to the leading historical and cultural monuments of tourist interest but will also check you in for a stay in resorts that are a literal make up of the historic place that you have visited. Some resorts even offer suites that have open spaces within your living areas. Some hotel rooms are even made with thatched coconut leaves and thick grass.

Even when the traditional art and architecture is given preference, that doesn’t mean that the resorts are going back on quality. Even in these traditional structures, world-class amenities are provided, but at reduced costs. To enjoy the traditional Kerala lifestyles, the best option is to stay in these traditional resorts.

It is interesting to note that the resorts and hotels built according to traditional architecture patterns are built only with locally available materials. The use of concrete and other artificial building construction materials are totally avoided. When staying in the traditionally built rooms, you will feel the warmth inside when it is cold outside and during the summer season when the mercury soars to higher levels, the temperature drops significantly inside the traditional structures. A cool breeze will blow into your cottage when the soaring temperatures are at its zenith outside.
