Caves
Hey have you been to any natural caves (not mines nor man-made underground)? If so, where? What is/are your favorite cave(s)?
I have been to almost all caves in South Dakota (in BlackHill area) and one in Missouri (can't remember the name, but it has something to do with Jesse James's hiding place). I don't have any favorite caves yet, because I love them all! My family and I are going into caves again this weekend.

Yes, I went huge cave in Carlsbad, New Mexico 10 years ago. Whoa very huge and pretty cold inside.
Done went another cave near Austin, Texas. Pretty cold and show something so strange like fossil there. First time, I went tiny cave (non-tourist service) somewhere in Austin, TX. But not safe cuz of some bats inside. My friend and I went inside. i see my friend's breath like white and very coldy. then come back so quickly. Like to come inside the cave during summer. Whoa feel chill. My fave cave is Carlsbad, NM. |

Yeah. I have been to several caves in my life, but for now, I can only remember of two.
The Lost Sea, located in a farming town of Sweetwater, Tenn. A nice little town. Chattanooga's Ruby Falls on Lookout Mountain, located on Lookout Mountain in Georgia just across from Chattanooga at the Tennessee-Georgia state line. |

Yeah, been to one at the Buchan Caves, out past Lakes Entrance in the Gippsland area of Victoria, Australia. Very LOVELY!! I went into the Fairy Caves, there were 3 of them. Fairy Caves was the shortest -- 1 hour underground tour. As I am sort of claustophobic of closed areas...so I braved the caves. *gulps* Gorgeous, yes, but I got scared crapless when the lights went out and it was pitch dark and I couldn't even see my HANDS in front of my face...*shuddering* Fairy Cave was discovered by Frank Moon in 1907 and opened to the public later that same year. Anyway, the Fairy and Royal Caves have those staglicimites (spelling, crap!) and stalicites...fascinating and beautiful! I took some photos...will try to find them and scan some and put them up here. ![]() For the time being, here's a link to some pictures I've found on the web.... http://nla.gov.au/nla.pic-an22966287 Goldie |

I went to Crystal Cave in Kutztown, PA. It is very beautiful colorful reflect. It is very cold inside. I feel like that I visit Superman's crystal cave home.

My family and I went to Jewel Cave in South Dakota last Saturday, and it was a blast! This time we had an interpreter with us and it was very very helpful! WHOO! We learned quite more than before because of the interpreter. We enjoyed the cave way more than before... because we understood most things the guide said.

Did any of you go to Kartchner Caverns in Benson, Arizona? It was discovered in 1978 and was disclosed to the public in 1988. It is very hard to get tickets. My brother, who lives in Tucson, and I tried to get tickets the last time I visited him, but we were turned away. I was so disappointed because it was like 110 degree on that day and all I could think was getting into the cave.

The guys who accidentally discovered the cavern refused to reveal its location to anyone until they got the AZ State Park to agree that the pristine condition of the cavern must be preserved. It is a living cave with the formations still forming. That is rare. Most caves are dried out. Formations are fragile and can easily get damaged if they are touched. As a precaution, limited tours are given everyday. There are other precautions also, but I can't remember what they are. Maybe the website has more info. |

I have been in several caves in lots of different places including Tasmania, Victoria, the Nothern Territory and England. I must say they're pretty awesome, the rocks have their own flurouscent lights and it's cold and damp but still pretty cool. Mind you, some have been quite narrow and low ceiled and I've never been more glad I'm short.

I believe I have only been to TWO caves in my entire life.
The first one was in Bodenmais at Mt. Silberberg, in the Bavarian Forest. It was an old mine and it went very deep into the mountain. It was very cold and narrow/small. The second one was the same place as Sabrina visited, Crystal Caverns in PA. I don't recall being in any other caverns. I hope when I move west, I would be able to visit some caves. @ PaxThoreau: That cave site you talked about sounds very interesting. Hope you will have better luck to visit there next time when you go see your brother in Arizona! |

@ Ziusudra! I'm also glad that I'm not THAT tall...am of medium height, thought...you know, Ziggy, ha! I just don't think I'd be able to go back down a cave again because I just am too afraid of caves and the impending darkness, should the power fail during a tour! Goldie |

Almost all of the posts re: this topic talk about caves that are maintained by private or government agencies. True cave exploring is called spelunking and I imagine(cuz i've never tried it)it is fraught with danger and one would need to develop experience by going with someone who knows what theyr'e doing.
Cheleler--you asked someone why the fear a few pages back: Well, for me, the long trail descending(switchbacks)into the mouth of Carlsbad Caverns made me think I was going back INTO Mommy! LOL! Now ain't dat scary!? LOL! |
