Do airports have deaf services?

I wonder if the airports have deaf services so deaf ppl can know when it is time to board or if the plane is delayed. Any info will be helpful.

You just check in the counter and ask for preboard pass, they'll give you a blue pass where you insert your airline tickets and get in the preboarding area. You'll be the first on the plane!

Also, Alex posted something about a major improvement with using airports. Check this post!

What if the airport isnt Phoenix airport, say like Chicago O'Hare which is an old and outdated airport?

Just go to the ticket counter to check your bags in and ask for pre-board and state the reason that you cannot hear the boarding announcements.. They'll still give you that pre-boarding pass to get on first. I do this all the time.

Interesting info! Never thought of that. I haven't been at airport since right before 9-11! I was flown from Los Angeles Int'l Airport (LAX) to Buffalo, NY, touched down in NY just exactly 48 hours before that plane struck the north tower! Whats worse? That plane that strucked North Tower was supposed to go to LAX!!! It gives me chilling feelings about it!

Anyway, thank you for the helpful information!

Amcrash

Hey, ya know, Amcrash does offer similar service, depending on which rail station your at. Usually they will escort you on the "Golf cart" letting you know when its time to board on the train. I never forget the awesome, cool lady escorted me and my girlfriend to the train. She was speeding though! hehehe (She knew we were behind!).

No, it doesn't when you go at the airport, to check in by getting your airline ticket or if you have your airline ticket you need to go to the desk, you tell them you are deaf and unable to hear when your flight arrives or when it time to get on one, they give you a sticker to put on your shirt, and once the person see it, then they know you need help getting on the plane etc..they also put deaf on the card too that goes inside the ticket pocket...They put you on the plane first before others...they do that with children that are alone without any adults...or for people who needs help

But if you are going to arrive in Chicago, they are no help!!...I went thru that before even tho I had a sticker , it was the most busiest airport I've ever been at, it soo confusing, and soooo many people....

Oh really?, I didn't have a problem getting home from Chicago airport but I did had a problem getting to Iowa from Chicago airport, I missed my darn flight cause I did not know where to go, and I asked the lady once I got off the plane she told me which letter and number to follow, I did but I arrived there to late cause there were to many people in line, I had to check in, but the plane left me LOL

But they put me on later flight which was 2 hours later, but it was changed to 4 hours cause of problem with the plane...

I am happy to accept their offer to help me and Heathrow Airport offer me using their VIP lounge Room with wheelchairs, and small children that is travelling on their own, without parents, waiting for the plane nearby rather than seeing other passengers stand in a long queue!!!

One thing is they want me go there earlier, it mean I won't have much time browsing last minute duty-free shopping, as I will order in the plane instead.

I flew a lot,, it depends on situation.

But I do have problems with pre-boarding services. The ... steward always give me a dirty look and ask me why do I have this written on my ticket. Questioning me, et cetera and I was acting deaf-mute, gesturing that I am deaf and act like an idiot. They always suddenly go, "OH! I am sorry. Okay... [talking slowly] I will tell you when the first-class people sits down, you can come in and sit anywhere you wwwwaaaaannnntttt ttttooooo......"
It always happen in SLC, btw. (SLC= Salt Lake City, Utah).

The last time I wore a goddamn sticker was when I was 11yrold flying to Alaska; I was embarassed with the sticker because for me, it says that I am "stupid and I need help". I can get around the airport myself, dammit. They put the sticker on me because I was "underage" to fly solo. The age limit was 12.

I love Arizona-- or was it Denver? They have those ... marquee ticker thingy that will tell you the time until an airplane lands, when it is time to board, which rows et cetera in the hallway so you dont have to walk ALL way up to the front to find out the ifnormation because the ticker is behind those mean stewards.
Yeah I think it was Denver-- I did run all across the terminal there because I saw the damn ticker saying, "LAST CHANCE TO BOARD, ALL ROWS" and I just got off the airplane and I gotta pee. DAMMIT. Thanks goodness I didn't pee my pants as I blared across the terminal. I think-- oh, yeah, that was my flight back from NYC and I DID have a sprained ankle from riding on subway but I ran nonetheless with a huge baggage on my back... Oy vey. Things I do for love.

I do travel a lot. London Airport (Hedewick- I cannot spell) is boring for me (too many expensive in-airport stores) but it is fascinated to see different people from different cultures and try to depict which country they come from and where they are planning to go! Imagine their adventures!

Colorado Springs Airport is the SMALLEST airport I even have been to.

I don't bother to pre-board. I am sick of seeing people stumble, try to figure out where their seat is, then try to pick up a fight with me but then realized they are WRONG.
I usually sit by the table, reading, doing my stuff until the line is gone and I go in last. I like to eb last. BEcause I can scan to see how many available seats are left and I ask the steward if I can sit anywhere (usually this can happen if the flight is not full)-- if yes, I run to the back because NOBODY sits there so I can have the whole row to myself.
:-)

I also don't bother to pre-board. I just simply wait until line forms and after waiting few minutes, I get in line. If the steward stop me, I just tell them that I am deaf and they always let me go - no big deal.

I travel quite a bit.. interesting airport at Lihue, Kauai - it's open air (before terminals). For watching people, my favorite is at Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris.

Smallest airport... my hometown! Inyokern airport - only two counters. 30 something seat airplane with props fly short 45 min to LAX...

I'm not crazy about Dulles airport (Washington, DC area).

It actually said that on the sticker?...

Yeah I agree with you on that part, I didn't really feel comfortable having a sticker on my shirt makes me feel like I'm a child or something...

I don't bother to pre-board at all. What I do is when I see a line form, I get into the line, and then I explain to the lady that I am deaf, and if this is the correct flight to this destination? Once that is confirmed, I go into the aeroplane.

I never had any problems with Chicago O'Hare... It is a good exercise there walking from terminal to terminal through their underground networks, but I didn't find it confusing.

I never had any dirty looks from people when I was at aeroports. I guess it helps to smile and be assertive. I think I scared the guy at the ticket counter in SLC last December when my flight to East Coast was canceled. I simply asked if the destination could be changed from NYC to Philadelphia, since I had to arrive next day and would miss meeting friends in NYC. When he said no, I went into a long story of list, and how I would have to pay for train tickets to get down to Philly, etc... He looked at me with big eyes and changed my destination with no problem.

I never had any problems with European airports. It was funny one time, in Germany, I wanted my friend to accompany me to the gate, so we pretended to use my deafness as an excuse. I was given a "accompanied child" ticket, and my friend "accompanied" me to the gate. LMAO... Fun memories.

deaf service is MUCH WORTH USEFUL TOOLS!

Yeahh Those airport have deaf services. I had many time to use the deaf service in airport.

deaf service is much worth tools for deaf people who attend airport. They will put you first service as first class like they will put you in front of line, etcs.

1. When you purchase or show your e-ticket [confirmation number] to front of ticket clerk. They give the ticket to you.

2. If they tried to talk to you, You tell them, "I can't hear" or "I can't speak" nor "can readlip", then they automatically recognize you being deaf person. but they will not ask as offer you for deaf service. Unless you ask them for your require deaf service. They will provide you deaf services for real.

I remembered that Once I almostly miss the flight but I was lucky when I caught flight. I ran to boarding gate after my flight arrive at airport, I saw many people inline, I was cut their line. I stood in front of line by flight attetion, I show my service pass with ticket to flight attetion at boarding gate. I came into airplane. I saw two seat available.. I was like "whew thank god that flight attetion put me first service as first class. Deaf service saved my neck..

You should get deaf services if you attended airport. [[[ ]]]

But In case: if ticket clerk did not offer you as deaf service, don't forget that ask front of ticket clerk for your require deaf service before you leave the front of clerk. Enjoy travel and good luck..

Northwest is sensitive I hear also. However I'd rather take the long drive accross the country. I can sleep at the rest stops and shower at the truck stops for free on my long drives. And the scenery of the great land is better on the road then from the sky.

This forum about deaf services in airports are interesting, I didn't know that USA airports ( I meant not all of them ) provided deaf services, but, I went there 6 years ago I was with my parents ( was 11 that time ) I am not sure that if Sydney(Australia) International airport has deaf service no Canberra Airport where I live... I will have to check it out. But my hometown airport, Canberra International airport is very easy to find out what time plane leaves etc etc
