Gender Vs Handicap Vs Race Vs Etc...

Suppose there was a country that had laws that forbids people from doing things because of their gender, handicap, race, etc.

If they could change the law to allow one thing first, which would you want it to be?

For instance, one country prohibits females and deaf people from driving.

Which would you rather they do... lift the ban so that females could drive or lift the ban so deaf people could drive.

If females could drive first, then deaf people (including deaf females) would have to wait until later when that law is changed.

If deaf people would drive first, then deaf females would still not be able to drive since they're females and would have to wait until later when that law is changed.

So, discuss!

I know, but they have to start somewhere.

History shows that it's progressive and not all done overnight.

In American History, it was gender... then race... then handicap.

Do you ever wish it happened differently?

My girlfriend just gave me a very good answer.

At first, she thought... "Women!"

She quickly changed her answer to... "Deaf people!"

I asked why.

Her response?

"So that you can drive me around!"

I think it depends on what landmark events there are... and what voids they created so a minority group could move in to fill in those voids.

I means the whole disabled movement got its roots in the American Civil War, when the men returned home and were unable to work-- so they needed compensations from the government. Mind you, this is an altogether different movement than the ableism movement we see nowadays. (Hence why I favour "ableism" over "disableism" because the latter still resonates memories of the movement in the 1800s.)

Feminism got its roots from when the men went overseas to fight in WW1, and women filled in the blue-collared roles.

And so on...

Then imagine she is a foreigner or naturalized citizen, elderly, and overweight.

Why is it that people make value judgments about others based on inconsequential things?

women first because they get get the men to listen their compassionate side toward the other group (race, handicapped).. you know men have a weakness for women (it's the sex/love thing, plus the mother thing that get men to listen... they do love their mother and their wife- well some of them do)

This is a loaded question. Driving is independence in our culture. To who do we give independence? I'd go with women because women are the ones who have safety issues with walking and public transportation. Besides, I want to drive!
