Straight people are a -majority-, just like hearing people. And just as there's Deaf Pride, there's Gay Pride. It's how people cope with being a part of a minority- forming a community and making themselves known.

If I told you to just shut up about being Deaf because nobody cares to know anyways, would you not be offended?

It is quite the same thing to tell members of the GLBT community they should do so. Even if you don't personally think it, you are sending the message that you believe they're wrong/abnormal, and as such, should make a hiding effort.

Intolerance will -never- go away if members of a minority do not make themselves known as functioning members of society who are proud to be
a part of their minority.

Yes, it's true, gay people admire members of their own sex, just as straight people admire members of the opposite sex. There's such a thing as propriety, however. Just because I might find someone attractive, doesn't mean that I'm going to jump his bones the moment he stands next to me at a public urinal. You must watch too much Queer As Folk.

(And for the record, my experience has been that some guys - regardless of their sexuality - check one another out from time to time. This mostly happened a lot during junior high and high school, when everyone was trying to see how they "measured up". This doesn't seem much different to me than women comparing their chests to one another.)

I'm sorry that watching straight people kissing distresses you so much. Again, that's your problem. The only problem I have with it is that I wish gay people had the freedom to do it, too. Other than that, I see nothing wrong with two people in love expressing their feelings for one another by kissing one another in public. Sure, there's such a thing as public lewdness, and it can certainly go too far... but just kissng? What is it about it that bothers you?

You were embarassed to be seen in public when pregnant because people then knew that you'd had sex? Good grief! Again, that's your personal shame at work. Sex is natural, and is nothing to be ashamed of. My guess is you were brought up to think that sex was bad? Be thankful that you're able to have children!

and no I am not ashame of sex. I just don't like talking about it to other people except my husband. And I just hate it when people make comment about my sex life because I am pregnant. It is none of their business.

I like privacy. What's wrong with privacy?

Edited: I am not suggesting a separate bathroom, because I know you have no choice. that no matter what, you still have a male penis, and all male penises use a male bathroom because of the urinal. Just trying to tell you how some straight guys might feel. Meaning don't give them a hard time by calling them homophobia.

More than often I wished gay men would go to the female's bathroom. Their manliness fades and do not describe them as actual "men" anymore. They set the blurriness of what a man and a female should be. Perhaps we should add a third door for gay and lesbian people.

You don't understand. It has a bad effect on society. It blurs the line of what is supposed to be "male" and what is supposed to be "female". Should this continue any further, it'd be chaos. I've done quite a lot of theoretical/philosophical research on this and it doesn't look pretty.

Rabbit, I can understand where you come from. I would not write "I AM GAY PRIDE" or "STRAIGHT PRIDE" to show off what kind of sexuality I have but Rainbow? (Yes I learn from American forums what Rainbow is about in America which different in Europe). Anyway I would like to express my feeling what I think of Rainbow.

I am an European and find that the people are overreact over that symbol of rainbow because of that "GAY PRIDE". I am wondering what you react if you see innoncent children draw rainbows? Would you forbid your children to draw rainbow, wear rainbow t-shirts, pictures, sticker etc that's because of gay pride symbol? It would expose the children into homophobes when they learn why they should not draw "Rainbow", wear t-shirts, mugs, sticker, etc. ?

Here in Europe, we view the rainbow flag as a symbol of peace and hope, not gay pride. Every kid likes to draw rainbows because they are pretty and friendly color. I have seen many rainbows in Kindergarten and schools... I have seen many rainbow stickers back of their cars... What I view? Of course pretty and friendly since I know it's a hope and world peace. I would say Environment friendly and peace symbol. I beleive that the City of Berlin is the one who knows what Rainbow is about. It might spread to Europe but it doesn't bother me really and won't change my mind because I find the color of rainbow is beautiful.

This rainbow flag is first originated in Italy as "PACE" (Peace) in 1961 , that's how influence to Europe countries...

Should I warn straight Europeans to not wear "Rainbow" t-shirts before they visit America for holiday?

I think it's ridiculous to influence the people negative over Rainbow.

As for the pink triangle, that is a symbol that Nazi Germany gave to homosexuals, to recognize homosexuals for who they were. (Just as they required Jews to wear Stars of David.) Making use of the pink triangle today is often seen as a "reclaiming" by the gay community of something that was once a symbol of disdain and hatred. This tends to disempower the negativity; several cultures in our world's history have similarly adopted once-negative images and/or nomenclature.

The reason you would likely meet with a "less than happy" response from members of the gay community would likely be because your mockery of their sentiments of pride would be quite obvious. As a straight person, you've likely never been stigmatized, harrassed and/or marginalized in society because of your sexuality. There's never been a NEED for you to "stand up to your critics" to let people know that you're proud of who you are, despite their hatred/bigotry/ignorance. It takes a lot more courage (even these days) for a gay person to stand up for themselves against a hostile society than it does for a straight person the other way around.

Honestly, I think it's rather disingenuine of you to state that you don't have anything against GLBT people, because to me, it's quite clear that you do. And, what you've chosen to focus on in this thread is rather petty, to boot.

Also, it's a pretty hateful thing to say that "if (gay people) don't want people to cause trouble, (they) shouldn't go around stating private things like that."

First off, that's like saying that a woman that is date-raped is responsible for being raped, because she decided to dress up nicely for a date, or wore perfume, or had a few drinks with her aggressor. Like she was ASKING to be raped.

That's like saying that black people deserved to be lynched in years past because they DARED to refuse to sit at the back of the bus, or because they DARED to look at a white woman, or because they DARED to use the same water fountain as a white person, etc.

Sorry, but the SOLE responsibility for any act of hatred belongs 100% to the person (or people) committing the act. Period.

People deserve to be treated with dignity and respect, no matter what color their skin is, who they love, or whether they can hear or not.

Interesting story but pink triangle are not longer after WWII here in Germany. I haven't seen them use pink triangle everywhere here in Germany... Maybe Berlin?

I will ask Sunshinelady about this. She born and raised in Berlin. I can understand that the people keep pink triangle as their memory.

I love the rainbow posture or stuffs. My friend told me, do not buy it. It is symbol of lesbians. *sigh* I grow up, I collect rainbows pictures, puzzle and shirt. I am disappointed that their point of view color of rainbow for the "lesbians or gay people".

Thanks for the link, it is very helpful. I love to collect the rainbows. I always fascinated to watch the rainbows after the rain. I never forgot, I saw three rainbow arches in Minnesotta. I dropped my jaw on the ground because it is so beautiful !

haha, I know. to me, it is nothing wrong to have rainbows, but getting paranoid that is the symbol of gay/lesbians. To me, as myself, I wouldn't look at kids, or people or anything they have rainbow as being gay or something. Yeah, but as going out bragging with pride or etc really is pointless to me. haha PDA is very common and sometimes getting tooo deep, in some places is illegal for PDA.

I've got a newsflash for you, Yiffy: gay and lesbian people have been around for a LONG, LONG time. And guess what? The world hasn't come to a standstill.

What DOES have a dire effect on society as a whole is the kind of ignorance and intolerance espoused by people who think it's ok to:

Lash gay people to fences after beating them bloody, and leaving them to die
Bomb gay bars
Beat up gays in parking lots with baseball bats
Rape lesbians who refuse to have sex with men
Rape gay teens with plunger handles in high school locker rooms
Scrawl things like "God Hates Fags" on gay people's houses, cars, etc.

If there's a detrimental side of homosexuality in American society today, it's because there are people in this country who think it's OK to let their hatred manifest itself in one of the ways I listed above. Those actions, however, are carried out by HATEMONGERS, not homosexuals.

The fact that homosexuals exist in today's society isn't going to make YOU gay. (Is it?) It's not going to turn a bunch of straight people gay. It MIGHT keep some closeted gay people from entering into sham marriages with straight people, thereby keeping them from ruining everyone involved's lives several years down the line once they decide to come out of the closet.

Sometimes I think the basic different between people like you and people like me is that when you see the words gay people, you see: GAY people. When I see those words, I see gay PEOPLE. I see homosexuality as a facet of who someone is. In my experience, people like you see that as the ONLY aspect of who that person is.

You say in a later post that you have friends that are gay? Either they're not really gay, they're not really your friends, or they don't really know how you really feel about them.

This rainbow flag is first originated in Italy as "PACE" (Peace) in 1961 , that's how influence to Europe countries... Should I warn straight Europeans to not wear "Rainbow" t-shirts before they visit America for holiday? I think it's ridiculous to influence the people negative over Rainbow. __________________

To me, as myself, I wouldn't look at kids, or people or anything they have rainbow as being gay or something. It's how people cope with being a part of a minority- forming a community and making themselves known. If I told you to just shut up about being Deaf because nobody cares to know anyways, would you not be offended? It is quite the same thing to tell members of the GLBT community they should do so. Even if you don't personally think it, you are sending the message that you believe they're wrong/abnormal, and as such, should make a hiding effort. Intolerance will -never- go away if members of a minority do not make themselves known as functioning members of society who are proud to be a part of their minority.

My friend told me, do not buy it. It is symbol of lesbians. sigh I grow up, I collect rainbows pictures, puzzle and shirt. I am disappointed that their point of view color of rainbow for the "lesbians or gay people".
