Hehe that's funny. My mum contracted German measles (Rubella) and found out I was deaf later. The doctor first said I was hearing, then they took me to so many different doctors until one finally confirmed I was deaf. My mum then started a program to make migrant women more aware of Rubella and the effects it can have on babies. I'm lucky to be only deaf and not brain damaged or any of the other effects.

Born profoundly deaf because my mother had Rubella, and I am the only odd in my family! My Mother suspect I am deaf as I am third child, but the doctor told her not to worry too much as he thought I was the lazy baby, and Mum wasn't satisfied with his response, and went to see the 3rd doctor and confirm my deafness when I was six weeks old baby!!
Umm, I am mother of three hearing daughters, and I must add that my second daughter failed at audiologist test when she was 8 months old baby and didn't response to the noise they were making, it baffled me because the other day she was ok and I suspect she had ear infection, but the Audiogist was thinking different and said she is deaf because I pass it on her, I disagreed with her, so I got my husband with me the next appointment to confirm that she is not deaf, on our arrival, she told my hearing husband she is positive that my daughter is deaf, but I am happy to say she pass it with flying colors. She is full hearing now and still has ear infections from time to time, which is rarer as the years go by. |

My Adopt parents were supsect about me when I walks closer to Train Track.. Really damn LOUD.. But I kept walking.. My parent stunned and surprised.. worried about me... decide to take me to see specialist doctor.. Found the results.. She is Deaf.. My parent decide send me to Oral School in Toronto,Ontario. I have health record says.. "Normal Ears" (hmmm) that puzzled me.. but I believe myself.. I'm born DEAF..

Lost hearing at the age of 5 to meningitis. I am an extremely unusual case, though—I only lost hearing in one ear. One ear is profoundly deaf and the other has almost normal hearing. This is clinically extremely rare. The doctors who examined me after my recovery wanted to publish my case. Although almost all hearing people would consider me very fortunate, in recent years I’ve come to realize that it wouldn’t make an iota of difference to me if I were partially or completely deaf. I’ve actually come to be somewhat proud of the fact that I at least partially share something in common with Deaf people.

I reckon that drums and etc inside both of ur ears look normal to specialists/doctors. Some Deafies become deaf by various reason like drum damage, etc.. |

according to my family, i was born hearing; however, when i was very young i had a prolonged illness that included having a very high temperature for an extended time. my family did not realize that i had become hard of hearing until an observant teacher suggested to my family that i have my hearing tested. literally, my parents, particularly my father, thought i was the village idiot. i was taught how to speechread by a very good speech therapist, and that is how i began to thrive in the hearing world. i learned asl after i left home.

I was born hearing, and am the only one deaf in my family. I was 4 years old and went to France with my grandmother to visit my relatives, and became sick with bad case of bronchitis, so my grandmother took me to a french doctor who gave me a shot of amoxicillin but gave me too much of it. I got better while still at France and went back home. I must have became deaf when that doctor gave me the anitbiotic (I was allergic to it after getting an overdose of it) or slowly lost my hearing during the stay in France with my grandmother and at home. After I got home from France, about a week and half later I was watching cartoons on tv and I had turned the tv volume all the way up.. my grandfather was puzzled why I had done that and came up to me.. said why did I put it up too loud..I said it was broken and wanted to hear. My grandfather was confused and thought something was not right..he told me he did call my name but I didn't turn my head to respond back. My grandparents took me to University of Virginia Hospital in Audiology and found out I was profoundly deaf. My grandfather told me that since I lost my hearing I was upset I could not hear anything and was crying but later got used to it. I was still able to communicate to my grandparents verbally so he made sure I didn't lose that and had me enroll in a mainstreamed elementary school with cued speech so I grew up with Cued Speech and oral
I knew ASL when I went to Kendall (KDES) in Washington, D.C. but was only there for a month then transferred to that mainstreamed school. I learned ASL again during High School.

My mother had German Measles during the 2nd month of pregnancy with me (I was born with 2 heart defects because of it - one has been repaired when I was a month old and the other one closed up by itself), but I didn't go deaf until I had spinal meningitis on October 1972 (a month before my 2nd birthday)...6 months later, my parents found out about my hearing. They took me to get my hearing tested after I didn't respond to them when they tried to call my name, and I could only say 1 or 2 words at age 2 (most 2 year olds can say simple sentences).....that's how they found out something's wrong.

My deafness was not genetic. In fact, I was born hearing and became deaf at 5 to 6 months old. It was caused by Rubella when mother was pregnant with me.
Now a doctor doesn't think my deafness was caused by Rubella and wanted to delve further into it and find the actual cause. |

Mine is a lot different than everyone else's that I have read in these 3 pages of posts. My parents went to Africa in the summer of '81. My mom was taking medicines to prevent from getting malaria. As soon as she realized she was preg then she stopped taking it. But it had already completely damaged my right ear (off the charts.. they cant even get a db for it) and left ear is mild hearing loss (would have been worse if she hadnt stopped when she did).
My parents didnt know I was deaf until I was like 3. Mom began to notice my sister always ran to the door to greet daddy when he got home from work cuz she heard his truck. I never knew he was there until he came in the room. Also, she dropped some pans by accident and I didnt even flinch. |
