I'm so sorry if this is the incorrect forum. I'm brand new here and an ASL Level 1 student that is really hoping to get some help learning a song. If there is a better forum/website that would be more appropriate for my question, please let me know! :)

My problem is that I would like to gloss it in correct ASL grammar as opposed to signing exact English.

I'm doing The Only Exception by Paramore for a project in class. I've attempted to gloss the first few lines... but my teacher mentioned it needs to be in correct ASL grammar (not signed in exact English) and I feel like I'm having a little trouble getting the grammatical order correct as I do not have a lot of experience with the grammatical rules.

So far, this is what I have:

When I was younger I saw my daddy cry
WHEN I YOUNGER I SAW MY DAD CRY

and curse at the wind.
CURSE WIND

He broke his own heart and I watched
HE BROKE HIS HEART I WATCH

as he tried to reassemble it.
HE TRY TO FIX (?) HEART **--- is it fix or put back together? Or literally reassemble? I couldn't find reassmeble on ASLpro, just fix.

And my momma swore
MY MOTHER SWORE

that she would never let herself forget.
SHE WOULD NEVER FORGET

And that was the day that I promised
I'd never sing of love if it does not exist.
(Not sure how to gloss those lines..)

But darling,
You are the only exception.
YOU ARE ONLY EXCEPTION
You are the only exception.
YOU ARE ONLY EXCEPTION
You are the only exception.
YOU ARE ONLY EXCEPTION
You are the only exception.
YOU ARE ONLY EXCEPTION

===Here are the rest of the lyrics that I have been unable to gloss due to my lack of experience with correct ASL grammar====

Maybe I know somewhere
deep in my soul
that love never lasts.
And we've got to find other ways
to make it alone.
Or keep a straight face.
And I've always lived like this
keeping a comfortable distance.
And up until now I've sworn to myself
that I'm content with loneliness.

Because none of it was ever worth the risk.

Well you are the only exception.
You are the only exception.
You are the only exception.
You are the only exception.
You are the only exception.

I've got a tight grip on reality,
but I can't let go of what's in front of me here.
I know you're leaving in the morning
when you wake up.
Leave me with some kind of proof it's not a dream.

You are the only exception. [x4]

You are the only exception. [x4]

And I'm on my way to believing.
Oh, and I'm on my way to believing.

==========

Thank you everyone for your time and have a great day! :)

For an ASL 1 student you have picked a song that is too hard for you to interpret. You should start with a song that you can do yourself with minimal assistance. You might be in over your head.

I surprised that your instructor is having level 1 students do song interpretations. Other level 1 instructors prefer to have their students practice storytelling instead. That's more culturally appropriate.

I hope no one goes to sleep during the umpteenth repetition of "you are the only exception" chorus.

Sorry. :D

Tara,

VERY Good lyrics you got there!! I've been struggling on my own as well (I'm deaf, can you imagine?) I suggest deleting articles (is, are, the, etc) to start with.

Here is mine that I've been working on, you can read it to get the idea...

IntensorPoet's Deaf World of Poems: My First ASL Lyrics: "Must Have ASL" (2nd revision)

My First ASL Lyrics: "Must Have ASL" (2nd revision)
Since my first post, I received refinements, suggestions and even PRACTICED it with musical instruments playing. I took out and added few things that seems to go into harmony with the rhythm of music. I am posting this second revision to receive final refinements before I create (or someone else) the vlog with this lyrics.

This is my attempt to compose an ASL lyrics for deaf music. I'm not proficient with "ASL Music", if you want to compose a video out of my lyrics, go for it! This lyrics is contributed to the Deaf community out of my love.

Instrumental music similar to Neal McCoy "Another Night" with no intro and ending perhaps converted to DJ style will need something different for intro/ending.

Sentence ends with these characters: , ? and !

* 2 words per sentence = 2 beats per word

* 3 words per sentence = 1 beat per word for first 2 words then 2 beats for last word

* 4 words per sentence = 1 beat each word

Must be followed STRICTLY as instructed regardless of how they should be or sounded like in English or poetic sense, we call that "ASL Poetic License"
