SEATTLE -- Two transgender men say they're the victims of discrimination after they were kicked out of a downtown mall for allegedly using the wrong restroom.

Trouble began when Simon Adriane and Sean Brochin needed to use the bathroom after watching a movie at Pacific Place mall in downtown Seattle.

Adriane and Brochin, who were both born female but consider themselves male, entered the men's bathroom, which upset a man in teh bathroom.

But the mall claims the men were simply disruptive.

"He was screaming 'you're a woman, you can't be in here!'" said Adriane.

"The first thing I thought is 'oh no, not again.' Because it happened many times in my life," Brochin said.

Adriane tried calming the man.

"I said I'm not a girl, I'm just here to pee," he said.

But the customer called security.

"Security was banging on the door and ordered us to get out," Adriane said.

The security guard escorted the pair out of the bathroom and out of the mall.

According to the state Human Rights Commission, transgenders are protected and have the right to use the bathroom of the gender they identify with.

But the commission recommends they use the unisex or family restroom to avoid wrestling with gender issues. In this case, Adriane and Brochin said it was occupied.

The two plan to file a formal discrimination complaint against the mall, with the state and the city. Their actions could be a crucial test of the state's year-old gay rights law.

"We've never had this kind of experience and we are going to revisit some of our procedures," said mall spokesperson Lynn Beck.

Beck says it could mean some retraining of security.

"I was scared, angry and humiliated," Brochin said.

Brochin said he typically doesn't like to talk about his personal details, but said he outed himself to his boss on Friday so that he can speak out and raise awareness of the issue.

The restroom incident sparked a protest at the mall's bathroom. Dozens of people who are in the city attending the Gender Odyssey Conference staged what they called a "pee-in."

I can't believe that happened in Seattle, Washington! Seattle supposed to be extremely liberal/open minded city that accept any kind of people. I guess it is not always true.

Maybe they encountered wrong crowd of people or maybe downtown Seattle isn't what you expected?

First I read this, shocked me that it was in Seattle! I agree with MetroGuy03, it is not always true. Seattle have the people too. Poor transgenders have less respect in the real life, and all people are looking for identify a person is just a gential, but what about their look? Also people can't expect transgenders to have the SRS all the times because not all of transgender are that rich..

And PLUS, that is why the unisex bathrooms are BETTER than Women and Men Bathrooms.

What do you mean? I believe that these people who kicked them out are newcomers or never met a transgender before. I saw the picture of two of them on that article. They doesn't look like transgenders to me. They looks gays or into bands to me. If I meet them in person, I won't know that they're transgenders.

Yeah... Many people still find transgenders as disgusting people. :(

I agree that unisex restrooms are better than Women and Men restrooms.

Yeah I agree with you at your post to Sequoias, people who was transphobia or finding transgender people as disgusting are those who never meet transgender people before. I was used to thought transsexual people have mental illness when I was little till I met one of my friend that was transman, he act so NORMAL, look exactly as boy, he's just like another people.

Same here...when I read the title, I was thinking "In Seattle???"

Same here. I never met one transgender til I moved here in Seattle. They changed my view on transgenders. They're very normal people just like the rest of us. I was raised by the environment that people views transgenders as "taboo". After I met them, I told the people including my family who looks down at them that they're wrong about transgenders. They refused to change their opinions on transgenders. They will when they finally meet one.

Yupp always meet someone or two before judge. :)

You might be right...they may be newcomers that saw these guys.      I'm surprised it happened in Seattle, though.   Anything can happen anywhere, though.

It reminds me of many things that did already happened in years ago, but that " happened " has been changed and more people recognized it and they accepted it. It takes years to change and for people to ACCEPT it.

I will give you a few examples:

Remember the history about black and white people who don't share their bathrooms/fountain drinks in old days ? They don't ride in the SAME bus. It took years for them to allow/accept them BOTH to ride in the SAME bus.

And, also Hitler who hated Jews, black, or any dark race... and he wanted them dead by killings. It took years for them to accept Jews, black or any dark race to live in Germany.

Same goes with homosexuals/lesbians/or transgenders - they don't come out of the closets for a loong time because, of religion issue & other things. It may take awhile or a long time for people to accept them just like the rest of its history from the past.

It was always the word, the " hatred " or " opposed " to that kind of idea that people who are not gettin' used to, because of the way they were growin' up. They were never taught about these things at schools in old days and everythin' was soo new to them and they don't know what to think or say about things like this. It's soo hard for them to understand, because of their children they are protectin' over against it. Some people were afraid that it may influence their children to become one like them or what ever that is to them.

Right now, I noticed some schools are now teachin' about " tolerance " via acceptin' homosexuals/lesbians/or transgenders nowdays. I've never seen like this ( schools ) before, because it was NEVER taught in my school in old days. Sooo... as you can see, it may take awhile for things to change slowly just like the rest of history from the past.

Be patient and give it time - one day, there will be no more discrimination.

I don't see why they're making such a fuss, the trans -- they DID enter the wrong restroom and insisted that they should been allowed to take a leak there when they have traits of a chick which I'm assuming. If I accidently went into the womens room I wouldn't continue on and try to take a piss in there. It doesn't matter what they consider themselves, it's how they look gentically. If they got tits and look like chicks, take the skirt door if they got balls take the pants door... Love it when other people try to bend rules of society to fit what they think it should be. Rules should be followed, they're not that hard to figure out... they looked like chicks they WERE chicks.... they LOOK like chicks (otherwise I don't see why that guy would be so damn upset, even if they dressed like guys without an operation it'd still be against the rules imo...)

Yeah someday the world will change. I am very glad there is schools that taught students about the glbt community and their history. I am with you all the way on this post!

Good post btw :)

They aren't fussy, they do not choose to be this. Can you imagine wake up in a girl's body, but really you are boy? Can you imagine that you have to deal with the periods, you have to wear the ridilicious dress, can you imagine you have to deal with other men flirting on you? Those people who call you dyke, lesbo, etc? What should you do? The only way out is... suicide or change to boy. You will go for change to boy, ah then you are transgender now, right.

While you are transgender, everyone hate you. They laugh at you, refuse give you jobs, refuse give you homes, treat you like mental illness, probably someone planning to murder you. Can you imagine how HELL transgender people have been through. Transgender is not only about what's between their legs, but about what's between their ears (the brain).

That can happen in men's restrooms or women's restrooms. Always remember to lock ;)

:gpost:

Unforunately, discrimination will not end no matter how hard we fight. I believe in future it will be less discrimination but there will always new things for people to discriminate. I won't be surprised if people will hate clones (when people started to clone people) or robots (they're slated to be on street within few years from now what I heard). Clones and robots might end up fighting for their rights too.
