So, I'm planning on teaching one of my friends the ASL alphabet so she can somewhat better understand me. I'm just not comfortable with speaking anymore.

I'm not really comfortable feeling like the 'disability' Kid, because I'm not. So I don't sign at school, I usually just write or type so someone, but other than that, I only sign to my best friend who has cousins who were born deaf. So that's a relief.
 
Great idea. You might want to look at lessons on lifeprint.com and do them together if you move beyond the basic alphabet. You can also see Dr Vicars video lessons on YouTube. Since you are new to ASL it will help with being sure you are both producing the signs correctly.
