Swear Words

People who want to learn ASL swearing first aren't much different than people who used to ask me only how to swear in Spanish or English. Maybe they feel if they are being crude and someone doesn't understand them then they aren't being crude.

I think learning cursing in ASL should happen right along with learning the language in general. Like when little kids say shit without realizing its a bad word until mommy spanks them and tells them to never speak that word. Then as you grow more mature you realize there are certain words that are just not acceptable to use in a public setting. You shouldn't tell the students right away what these words are, but as they hang out with more signers they'll soon learn the profane signs and when and when not to use them just the same way that spoken language is acquired.

My youngest niece still uses the "F" word on my FB's page. (I joined FB last April because my friends begged me. So, I joined.) She's 13, btw. I think I probably will talk to her in person when I see her tomorrow. I don't know. Maybe it's none of my business.

One of the reasons why I am hesitant of allowing my daughter to have a Myspace or Facebook.

I was the same as you RDC girl, not wanting to ask my ASL teacher about profanity, but eventually found some of the signs at Profanity in ASL - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

haha, how funny i use the a_ _ hole sign as it is in mr holland opus. i use a local sign for b _tch. its signed as dominant hand girl, then push closed letter a forward. as to say girl push off or back up with a closed a.
i think its just local slang though. its fun sign but i try to not sign profanity. my hearing friends like to learn it, i use it as reward system... one bad word a week. to keep them interested in continuing to practice signing. it work so far

I learned all of the swear words in Spanish from my friends over beers. My Spanish-speaking friends thought that it was a hoot to teach them to me. Of course, I learned the useful words, too.

I've never told my kids that swear words are bad. I told them that swear words are inappropriate and will get them in trouble at school. My kids don't say them around me but I'm sure that they use them among their friends away from school.

Having taught middle school, I can tell you that most of the kids use swear words in the hallways and when they think that the teachers won't hear them. It's the kids' way of trying to sound cool or adult-like. It's also a rebellious activity that they can get away without the risk of severe punishment (maybe a detention if they're busted).

P.S. Now I'm giggling like a school girl over the adult smilies! :giggle:

Is there a website or someplace where I can look up and see cuss words in sign language?? Or does anyone know words?
You see when I could talk thats how I expressed myself if I was mad or angry. Its harder now, that I'm unable to talk anymore. I can still hear, but can't talk, due to medical reasons.
Thank-you :ty:
Yup, I had see some like that in books even some related to drug abused as it is useful tools for social workers to help deaf people get out of trouble. Also useful tool for people help deaf children who was in sexual abuse or whatever that need to said in court what other said to other.

"Signs of Sexual Behavior: An Introduction to Some Sex-Related Vocabulary in American Sign Language" (Paperback) by James Woodward
"Signs of Drug Use: An Introduction to Some Drug and Alcohol Related Vocabulary in American Sign Language" (Paperback) by James Woodward

Depend where you live at and go to deaf community center as sometime they collect many sign languages books use for reference that where I saw sex and drug in sign books when I was in high school. Please feel free contact me and tell me where you live then I will look up deaf community near you It is like treasure or forbidden apple that hidden away and forgotten as collect dust.

By the way, Yes correct as many deaf answered said that you will learned most is from other deaf people. Sometime my co workers asked me what sign in dirty and I won't show. Sometime they asked me what it mean as they saw in movie that deaf person signed like MM did that.

haha ahh...

Alot of my hearing friends would always ask me asl signs. the first thing they would ask me for sign would be the swear words in asl. its hilarious. and even alot of my GUY FRIENDS are intrested. they're always asking me the stupidest signs they want to know. they wanted to know ass*****, the F word (which apparently i think everyone says would have to be the middle finger but idk if thats true) motherf*****, etc. my guy friend asked me how to sign: "you're a white japenese boy" (no offense to anybody) idk why. there was a guy in the cymbal line (who is now in snare line) in my marching band is chinese. If my guy friends keep asking me for more swear signs, i'm gonna have to say: " firgure out for yourself" but then they'll give me the puppy pout or offer me money or gum to teach them a swear word but i wouldn't fall for it.
