Are you talking about the email subscription notification when a response is posted to the thread, or are you speaking about the subscription manager in your user control panel?
I think the subscription manager keeps the threads in there indefinitely.
But the way the email response works is it only sends you the first email that someone replied in the thread, you won't receive another email until you visit the forum again, that is if you set it on instant email response.
Daily works once per day, and weekly goes once a week. You have to revisit the forum to keep the email subscriptions going, otherwise I think it's just an auto anti-spam setting via the VB admin side control panel so it doesn't keep feeding the user emails if they don't visit past a particular amount of days. There's no three day option that I'm aware of, unless you meant that it's a daily email subscription that expires after 3 days.

How do I subscribe to a thread or forum?

What subscription modes are available?

Thread subscriptions can be sorted into folders for easy management. You can create as many folders as you wish by going to 'Edit Folders' in the 'Subscribed Threads' section of your User CP. To add a new folder, enter the folder name into one of the blank boxes and save the page. To delete a folder, delete the folder name. Editing a folder is done by simply editing the folder name in the list.
You can also manage your individual subscriptions by clicking 'List Subscriptions' under 'Subscribed Threads' in your User CP. Here you can select which subscriptions you wish to manage and delete them, move them to another folder, or change their subscription type.
Forum subscriptions are not managed through the List Subscriptions page and are shown on the User CP page where they contain the option to unsubscribe from the forum.
