Special license plates for the hearing-impaired

I disagreed, due to privacy concerns. I don't want to advertise myself as Deaf driver.

The only thing I would support is that it is done though DMV system rather than License plate. If Deaf person registered their vehicle, DMV should have create note on their system. All police have Laptop in their cruisers and could run license plate check (They always do that) and should show up on their screen instead of showing up on License plate in plain view. So coding on license plate is not good idea.

Agree what you said against special plate. But almost states never add "Deaf" or "hearing impaired" on driver licenses. Must use two mirrors for deaf drivers only. I dislike it. So i have deaf driver visor card, too.

This got me to wondering if bad guys target drivers with handicapped parking plates? :dunno:

Handicapped plate is too vague.

I think Deaf is one of the easiest target of all disability. When crooks see that one is Deaf, so they know making noises won't be an issue for them so that they don't have to be too quiet. Most criminals hate making noises. Secondly, Criminals would assume that Deaf can't make calls that reduces chances of crooks getting caught by cops. I know it is not the case anymore with Deaf, thanks to FCC making relay service possible.

I wouldn't want to advertise to a stranger in a parking lot that I'm deaf. No way!

Right, that is why Handicapped parking plate is too vague and meaningless while having plate telling one is Deaf is much worse.

I would think that handicapped plates might infer that the driver can't fight back or chase down the crooks, which would make them appear vulnerable to attack.

I guess we need to get the opinion of a criminal to know what kind of targets they seek.

I remember some cases where stupid crooks attacks people on wheelchair, especially during the first week of month. Crooks knows they get SSI or whatever on each month making them easy target. Handicapped people are not immune to criminal activities.

We really don't, their actions speak volumes. They go for people or children that they perceive won't fight back, won't be vocal, and can be easily controlled. They do target people with handicapped plates as well as those from out of state that appear lost. For people with disabilities especially it's important to be alert and aware of your surroundings and who's near you. Don't park in isolated areas and don't go to your car if the lot is empty, except your car and a van parked right next to you. In that situation, call the police and ask for an escort.

In my state - Alabama, the "Hearing Impaired" is labeled on back of driver license.

There is other option - use handicapped decal.

When you start drive - remove the handicapped decal and when you come to parking - use handicapped parking so hang the handicapped decal back on.

Oh wow, I know not all drivers with handicapped parking permit are SS users.

I would advocate this for those who are deaf and have a car with turbocharged engine. See, someone would look at license plate. Let's pick on a deaf person, ok? Then they'll see the car is turbocharged. They'll think twice. Not many people want to compete with those that are turbocharged. They're in a league of their own.

I would not advocate getting this for a 1995 Buick Skylark. People will get picked up easily. If a person had a 1987 Buick Grand National, by all mean go for this license plate. We've to show the whole world that we're a cool bunch of people. Deaf rules!!!!

Turbocharged --> :slap:

Decal? Do you mean the hang tag on the rearview mirror?

Some handicapped people who drive their own vehicles prefer the permanent tag (license plate). Some, who don't drive but ride with others, have to use the mirror hang tag. Then again, others who have temporary mobility issues get the renewable temporary hang tags.

My SIL has a renewable hang tag. He tries not to use it but sometimes his leg hurts too much and he will park in the handicapped section. (His right leg was amputated below the knee last year; he has a prosthetic leg now.)

It's kind of weird that his handicapped tag is temporary; like maybe his leg will grow back some day.
