Sorenson vs ZVRS

Just because ZVRS buys those Z20s for $1500 or so and they have to buy hundreds or thousands of them does not mean Sorenson's VideoPhones cost Sorenson nothing. You also have to remember that Sorenson has to pay engineers, programmers and manufacturers to develop and design their videophone, so it does cost upwards of thousands of dollars as well per device.

I agree with you but we still don't know the actual cost of VP200, ASSUMING if Sorenson decides to sell to public. Engineering costs? Component costs? Labor costs? Build costs? These numbers are tightly sealed and are being kept at Sorenson. My best personal estimate would be around 500.00 because I have already cracked VP200 open and inspected components inside for prices.

Your point about Cell phone porting is sort of a moot point because you do have to pay to get a new phone from AT&T, Sprint or others at a discounted rate if you sign a 2 year contract with them. If you wish not to have a two year contract, you will have to pay the full price for the phone - then the carrier won't care if you port out because they wouldn't have lost money. Should you buy their phone with a discount, and break the lease and go elsewhere, you will have to pay a early termination fee.

You got me and I realized that. Still, what about PREPAY? No NTF charges and other fees. Just walk in and walk away.

Maybe all VRS providers should follow the ways of Mobile phone carriers, and make us buy their devices at a discounted (free?) rate with a 2 year agreement not to port out or buy their device at full price ($800 for the Z20?) and port out whenever so each VRS company won't have to whine about losing money.

VRS providers reaps millions, among millions of dollars per month. Its a money making machine at around 5-6(?) dollars a minute per VRS caller.
Come on. TV, Internet, telephone and cell providers's wet dream of charging us to use their services at same rate as VRS, all because of EQUAL communications among with the hearing world. No, that's not going to happen. It is their business decision to lock us in with 2 year agreement to recoup money.

I think you were misinformed when you made that video.

Not quite misinformed on his part - I'm actually glad deafaussie made that video. The amount of misinformation going on out there and also in those forums around here is quite frankly pretty appalling, sickening, and borderline comedic.

Furthermore, obviously, that video was not directed to you alone but to the community in general, so I don't understand why you feel it was pointed to you in a way that offends you, especially since you've shown that you understand how porting works in general.

People need to understand 2 things: 1) That VRS Providers does NOT own the numbers (thus they should stop making comments such as "they took Sorenson's number that was given to me!" because the number is actually the customer's, not Sorenson's, and 2) that numbering providers REQUIRE "LOA" (Letter of Authorization) that is signed by customer (physically or electronically signed) before the number can be ported away from one provider toward another. Thus, unless the numbering providers is in "bed" with certain VRS Providers, there is no such thing as one VRS provider stealing numbers from another. When people make silly comments such as "OMG, Purple stole number from SnapVRS !!!!!!111!!!2", all it does is make me go

Deafaussie,

Thank you for taking the time to explain porting and all the misinformation that Sorenson is putting out there right now. Hopefully many people will watch your vlog and understand that their 10 digit number is THEIR number not Sorenson's.

Hopefully people will ignore the lies from Sorenson about being charged $400+ if they wish to port to ZVRS or any other carrier. This new tactic by Sorenson shows they are scared of at least one company and no longer the only game in town.

I am appreciative of Sorenson for putting VP's in the hands of many people and allowing the deaf to come together as a community. But they became too lax being the only major VRS provider for many years. Now several other providers are coming along and giving deaf users more features and services. Sorenson has been caught flat-footed and are now trying to stop the bleed. I have left Sorenson after seeing their tactics and experiencing their behavior towards consumers. I believe in the power of choice and I have exercised my rights.

My concern is their new tactic will force people in to the two major camps and start separating the Deaf community. If you are a Sorenson user, you will end up being blocked out from people who are using other VRS providers. This is Sorenson's fault so the blame lies squarely with them. All other VRS providers are interoperable so if you have one VRS phone, it will work with all other phones with the exception of Sorenson.

I'm not sure whether to laugh or cry, but now Sorenson has released a 3rd video:

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pGtP1KLrADw]Customers port back to Sorenson[/ame]

Seriously Sorenson, we get it. You don't like ZVRS. Good or bad, you are advertising to your own customers that there are alternative VRS providers to your service.

It is obvious that there is miscommunication going on here. It is a shame that porting isn't being made clear to every customer, and we work hard to try and make every customer happy, but it is obvious from your videos that may be an unachievable goal.

As a US citizen, I applaud that you are trying to help the education effort about VRS and porting. Phone numbers belong to customers! That's a great message to spread!

As a ZVRS employee, I applaud the free marketing, and the new customers.

Jeezz.. Sorenson's customers on video look foolish cuz they look so desperate want sorenson back.

I noticed that ZVRS is the honest company. While sorenson, purple, viable, and more?? Did illegal thing that FCC fined them. While ZVRS nothing and no debts. That tell a lot! Also, ZVRS remain on high road and always say postive thing about life. Only facts that show the comparison of products.

No ZVRS is not jealous. Sorenson is big and monster and yet jealous of ZVRS. Thats why Sorenson is attacking on ZVRS. Sorenson need find the size of company not ZVRS.

Hello, I'm a newbie here.

A few weeks ago, I got a Z-20, and I have been meaning to sign up for one. I was totally aware of what I was doing, and I knew exactly why I wanted to port my 10-digit number from Sorenson's VP-200. The reason why I chose Z-20 is the fact that I only have to use one line for VCO since I am a big VCO user. No separate voice line requires at all! I love it! I heard about the free Z-20 program through others, and I wondered how that worked. When I requested for one, the sales representative at ZVRS was very concise.

Before I switched to ZVRS, I have been a Sorenson customer since November 2006 when I got my first VP-100 then got replaced with VP-200 once it's released. When I went to college, I also got a VP-200 for the dorm. I kept it throughout college, and now that I am no longer there, I brought it back home with me. I tried to send it back to Sorenson since they never bother me about it. I haven't use it for over a year since I lived off-campus with roommates who already have VP-200 during my fourth year. I told Sorenson to send someone to pick up my VP-200, but for some reasons, their installer didn't show up at my home. He has the nerves to lie to me and said he was here. I complained to the customer service and told them their installer wasn't assertive enough, trying to contact me once he arrived at the door. The customer service apologized and said they will send me a shipping label. It's been more than three weeks now, and I still haven't gotten a shipping label yet. So, technically I still have my VP-200 with my 585 (Rochester) 10-digit number, and I'm truly disgusted by their disorganization.

I used to work for Viable, and I was an intern for two months there, working as a technical support specialist. I was one of the employees who didn't get paid, and I can tell you I'm not taking the whole VRS industry lightly after what I have experienced through. I don't usually boast about VRS technology, but so far ZVRS has been doing pretty good. I like what they have to offer. No other VRS provider can beats their Z4 Mobile, 1Number, and their integrated VCO feature. Sure there are VRS providers that have one of the features, but unfortunately they lacked the other features I find useful. However, I am not pleased with ZVRS's high-volume VRS calls, and I have to wait a few minutes. FCC requires VRS providers to answer 80% of the calls in 120 seconds, so I guess I was one of the 20% when I waited 4-5 minutes. I reported this to their customer service and told them that I had to resort to other provider like SnapVRS. They understood, and I don't see why they would worry too much since having a high-volume calls everyday is pretty much a good thing for any VRS providers. The worst thing that can happen is customers porting their 10-digit number to other providers. I should also mention that Z-20's VCO feature is fully compatible with SnapVRS, and that's one thing I like about Tanberg E20. I believe this feature only works if I use other VRS provider that use SIP, and I was aware that SnapVRS's Ojo is SIP-based as well, so I figured the VCO would work. Of course, Z4 or other SIP-based Z-products would work too.

Just tonight, I was called by Sorenson's regional manager from my area, and he begged me to port my 10-digit number back to Sorenson. I told him my reasons and told him that their VCO feature sucks. I asked him why should one have too many separate resources or devices just to achieve the same level of functionality as the Z-20. I told him I wasn't interest in having a nTouch VP in addition to a 15-inch TV, and a separate phone line. Believe it or not. We actually negotiated over the VP. He said he was willing to pay for a year-worth voice plan on the top of my AT&T unlimited TAP plan for my iPhone. I used Skype which I paid for the last 11 months each time I use VCO with Sorenson. He tried to offer me one year subscription of MagicJack. He even try to get me sold on the free iPad 2 deal! I actually hesitated at some of the deals he was trying to make with me, and that must have been stupid of me to nearly fall for that crap, but I must admit the iPad would have been a good deal for an idiot. He said he would give me time to think about it for 24 hours. Thirty minutes later, he changed the deal, and his final offer is the nTouch VP, a 15" TV, and $300 (he intended to buy out my Z-20, which I realized was a bad deal after our conversation). I apologize if I rambled too much here, but I thought I must share this with you guys. I don't like their porting marketing scam.

VRSEngineer, if you are reading this, can you please enlighten me on why they may want us to port their previous customers' number back to Sorenson? I mean… What if I got myself a free iPad 2 out of this deal, and still use ZVRS as my primary provider through my Z4 soft phone and leave the nTouch VP in the dust? That's something I think they failed to realize if it's not the porting that brings them profit, but the constant use of their VRS service. Unless you can refute this and clarify for me. Thanks. I asked you specifically, because of the great VRS knowledge you possessed. :)

And we do understand. Any VRS customer has the right to dial-around to reach any other VRS provider for interpreting. That is your right, and we have no intention of changing that.

Most videophones will let you dial an IPv4 address (208.94.18.175), a DNS name that points at that IPv4 address (zvrs.tv), or a 10 digit phone number that points at that IPv4 address (8888881116). The 10 digit phone number is stored in the iTRS database, and is used by any VRS provider videophone to place a call as if it were a point-to-point phonecall.

If you use a non-ZVRS videophone today, you can call 8888881116 and reach ZVRS VRS interpreters. Give them a try. They're all professionally certified.

Other providers have phone numbers that allow you to do the same, which can be found on their respective websites.

Those tactics are new to us as well.

I've heard rumors of the "free TV" gimmick, but never giving customers cash outright. As I don't have any direct personal involvement with anyone else who has been given such perks, I really can't call Sorenson out based on personally obtained facts.

The $300 cash is _very_ surprising. It is one thing to subsidize the price of a videophone, or of equipment that would make a videophone operational (like a free TV for a VP200 or nTouch VP). It is another thing entirely to give customers cash incentive to use their service. I think the FCC will want to hear about this. We will make sure they do.

If you feel the offers were inappropriate, and you wish to change this behavior, I can only suggest that you consider reporting it with the FCC using form 2000C:

FCC Consumer Complaints

The online form is here:

https://esupport.fcc.gov/ccmsforms/form2000.action?form_type=2000C

The FCC requires a 30 day response to any inquiry from that form. Filing one will ensure a response.

My first warning would be: make sure not to sign anything that commits you to something that isn't made absolutely clear to you.

You _can_ use any VRS provider's equipment and dial around to any VRS interpreters you wish. This is what dial-around is all about. The primary downside is that it will require that you fingerspell any phone numbers you wish to dial.

Incoming PSTN audio calls to your phone number will still get you a VRS call from your default provider. This means that you can't have in-bound-audio calls route through to a ZVRS interpreter, if SorensonVRS is your default provider for that phone number.

If you don't really care about your 10 digit phone number, why not throw it away by porting it to Sorenson (and never using nTouch), and just sign up for a new ZVRS Z4 phone number and use that mobile client on your new iPad2 instead?

So long as you haven't committed to something with SorensonVRS by signing something that says they can take it back from you if you don't use their service, I'm not seeing the fiscal downside here for you.

If you were still looking to use your old number through nTouch, you will lose out on features like ZAlert, 1Number, and point-to-point videomail if you port your phone number from ZVRS to SorensonVRS.

So long as you don't use/need that old phone number, or if you do that you don't use/need those features, I wouldn't blame you for considering the very gracious offer SorensonVRS has extended.

This is really all part of being a savvy consumer, and knowing what you can and can't get away with.

Providers _do_ keep a history of business they've done with you in the past. For anyone thinking you can just keep porting your phone back and forth to get free stuff: VRS providers will notice pretty quickly what you're up to ;)

Be careful. Be safe. And I'd love to see copies of anything they want you to sign along the process of doing so.

Of course, I knew that. I was saying I wasn't expecting VCO to work seamlessly with SnapVRS since they are not my default provider for the Z-20. I thought the VCO feature would break once I connect with them, and I would have to sign to the interpreter to communicate with the end-party rather than using my voice alone. I was hoping you can elaborate on why the VCO works. I bet it wouldn't if I use Sorenson VRS interpreters since their VCO technology works differently unlike SnapVRS's Ojo or ZVRS Z-20. Although, I can give this a try later and get back with you on this eventually.

I will definitely consider it since the form's very convenient and online unlike the 1040 tax forms we have to fill out every year. Thanks for the tips.

Well, I was expecting a call from him tonight to negotiate again, but I think he probably realized he's wasting his time on me after doing some researches. I was going to taunt him anyway like I did to the Ambit Energy consultants that has been harassing me. Hey... maybe he read this thread and realized it was me trying to screw with him. :giggle: Personally, I don't give a flying puck (and yes I do mean the hockey puck ) if he finds out. He should have left me alone in the first place after I rationalized with him and the person that contacted me before him. Like I said, I want a simple videophone hardware that has all the features I wanted, and only takes up a very small amount of space on my desk which does not require more power outlets. An nTouch and a 15" TV are already over the limit, and I don't care how much or how nice it is. VRSEngineer, as bad as I want to share the paperworks with you, I don't think I will ever see it since I'm staying. I'm looking forward to own an iPad 3 in the near future, so none of his deal will convince me to stay. By the way, you gave me a brilliant idea. I should have asked him what's in it for him since I will personally tell him that I plan to rob him his good money out of this negotiation deal and leave the nTouch VP in the dust. I already have a Z4 with a separate 10-digit number that I am ready to jump ship in emergency, and not many people knows my current 10-digit number anyway. That should be enough to have him hang up on me indefinitely.

Are you serious?? Soresucker said that??

I want to say that.. same with ZVRS are asking porting back.. same with Sorenson same with everyone... same idea with netflix begging us back with them.

I still think that ZVRS is champ. However, I noticed that whenever a hearing or hard of hearing person calls me, they are somehow put on hold while ZVRS calls me. Whenever I answer, I then get put on hold while the next available interpreter is ready to take my call. This is new to me. Before, whenever I answer the phone, the interpreter instantly shows up on my screen.

The result of this change is that many hearing and hard of hearing people hang up on me before I get a chance to talk with them. Frustrating! I hope this gets better, as I would love to stay with ZVRS due to their VCOPlus feature. I would not return to Sorenson even if they (illegally) try to pay me!

Yes thats true, because ZVRS had an unexpected demand of VRS calls and are opening up to and inculding 5 new additional call centers. Right now, they are actively seeking and recruiting highly trained and certified interpreters to work for them.

So give a week or two and the Average Speed of Answer (ASA) will be back into normal range as mandated by FCC.

Jeff Rosen, ZVRS' General Counsel left a comment...

On Deaf World As Eye See It blog,

Jeff Rosen, ZVRS' General Counsel came to my blog and left this comment.

This is WORTH reading! Here's the excerpt of his comment:

"Recently I met with the FCC to discuss our petition for a waiver to allow the limited use of remote video call centers which are fully compliant with FCC rules and are automatically monitored for fraud. At the meeting, the FCC invited further discussion on the interoperability of Sorenson’s videophones and mobile programs and porting phone numbers. People may be interested in reviewing the filed ex parte summarizing the meeting, along with the documents shared at the meeting:

Who the fuck cares?!? I was Suckerson installer. After being let go, I joined ZVRS as its installer and loved every minute. I had to agree to be let go because of my husband's health issue that needed my attention. I stay with ZVRS products. I just got Z20 a few weeks ago and like it okay but would I dump it to go back to Suckerson? HELL NO.....I have Z20, Z340, Z4, Convo and Sprint IP. I'm happy with all those I have in both home and my EVO and iPod 4G.
Keep that in mind it is anyone's personal choice/preference with the VPs without being criticized. To each own is all. So pray and tell me why do you ever criticize former Purple employee for not using Purple products? Do you want me to criticize your cellphone/pager? Huh? I don't think so.....

Hey Misha! He always butters up Sorenson and have made negative replies against Purple and other VRS companies. You check history of his threads and replies and they should tell you about him on VRS.

A Sorenson rep called me on my Z340 and offered me to port back to Sorenson (I ported the number to ZVRS in May of 2010). When I told him that I rather stay with ZVRS, he offered me an iPad 2. When I still told him no, he offered me a laptop computer AND an iPad 2. When I still told him no, he said, "That's unfortunate, but if you change your mind, let me know."

Is the offering of incentives such as an iPad and laptop computer illegal? I wasn't offered cash like someone else upthread was, but it feels illegal.
