There have been claims that hearing people do not speechread. The end goal of AVT is to make a deaf kid "function" like a hearing kid with no speechreading, as it's seen as a "crutch". Check out this article: Infants May Lip Read to Learn Speech - ABC News
Language is not just an auditory process, it is the integration of visual and auditory information as the child learns words," said Stephen Camarata, professor of hearing and speech sciences at Vanderbilt University. "What happens in infancy has important ramifications for later development

Gee, I thought speechreading was a crutch! LOL.......

This article ultimately goes back to the importance of face to face communication when acquiring/learning a language.

I definitely believe this. I always thought lipreading would be way too hard for me, and as a hearing person, I never really tried. But then I started learning asl. I would go online and watch vlogs of people signing to practice my receptive skills. Some of them were too hard to follow but sometimes I'd realize that between their signing and the fact that they (some of them) were mouthing some of the words, I'd catch what they were saying. I think if they put their hands down and I had to rely solely on lipreading I'd be lost, but a combination of the two made it possible to understand.

AVT therapists and specialists are full of BS.

AVT therapists and specialists are full of BS.

Agreed! They do not promote speech as a useful skill, but rather as the be all and end all. I also have to say that it seems like AVT therapists and advocates seem to think that it's still 1945, and that hearing kids will 100% accept dhh kids for a gosh a rootie time having a malted after Bible study.
They seem to think that ALL dhh kids will be able to take advantage of ALL the advantages of the hearing world. Like they seem to think that the Auditory Verbal Approach will magically assimulate dhh kids into the hearing world...All the kids will be in high honors classes, and have tons and tons of friends....they never think that the kid might not exactly fit into the hearing world, or be limited to the bad fringes of the hearing world. A lot of pro AVTers don't seem to understand that the overwhelming majority of dhh kids can only superfically be a part of the hearing world.
And god, AVT really is a great receipe for self hatred. The message being given is " I'm only good enough if I can fake hearing. Being deaf or using "Deaf" stuff (ie speechreading, Sign, even closed captioned. I remember someone who is very hardcore AVT saying that her deaf daughter didn't even use CC?!?!?) is BAD!

I hate saying this, but I think that AVT needs to be banned forever.
We need to get rid of it, as it is AUDIST to the MAX!
Seriously, WHY should a dhh kid have to live life as an eternal speech therapy session? And it IS...it's basicly speech therapy on steriods, and also turns the parentsinto a therapist! I remember Deborah (the mother of the HOH girl who ended up going to FSDB) saying that when she started out with AVT, the therapist suggested all kinds of Formal Activities to make stuff like a grocery store visit a Formal Spoken Language Oppertunity. Like you couldn't just interact normally with the kid....but you had to act like you were your child's own personal spoken langauge therapist. That's another thing that angers me about the auditory verbal approach......it assumes that dhh kids cannot develop spoken language skills without being in an eternal spoken language session. For crying out loud, we live in a hearing society. Kids can just pick up stuff! As long as kids get quality spoken language therapy, they will develop oral skills.

The fact is, parents are the child's first teacher and with that comes responsibility. Each interaction you have with a child is a learning opportunity. I think there is nothing wrong with making a point of giving, and expanding upon a child's language.

AVT therapists and specialists are full of BS.

The reason I say this is that, they have this practice of blocking their lips while communicating with deaf children and wont respond to them unless they use speech skills. I think that is just downright cruel. Hearing kids are not put through this s***. Again, with the audism.

I went to a Deafhood monologies play and I was shocked to learn that back in the 1600s and 1700s, they would pour acid in deaf children's ears, hammer and break skulls, put tubes through their noses to go thru their ears from their noses, and many more.

Deaf children and deaf people have endured centuries of torture from hearing people for the sake of being fixed.

AVT is another form of torture, a mental one.

Just a shame.

Makes deaf kids try to learn to hear with residual hearing. Not looking at lips.

Me too. I can't do it, and it makes me furiously angry

yeah also, the speech therispost's facial expression showed like she was disappointed with me. It made it worse for me to feel that way becuase i was a child!

But the thing is CSign, kids can pick up stuff incidentally. There's nothing wrong with parental involvement. But AVT expects parents to serve as surrogate speech therapists, with every single waking moment A Formal Languange Learning Oppertunity.
In other words AVT parents would be the ones who were constantly drilling with flashcards, or who overprogram their kids.....that's the intensity of this approach......and trust me. Some Clarke (Florida) parents were saying that they were getting told they weren't doing enough AVT with their kid...it's super intense.

I couldn't imagine doing that. I have to lipread.

They actually make deaf/hoh kids try to understand without lipreading? *smh*

Yes. My friend said that her kid (who is now a teenager) came home from kindergarten and asked his mom why they did the auditory training. He said that his CI worked much better when he could see her lips, and sign....

And indeed DeafBadger, even hearing people can and do speechread.
