Yep, it has been used as a statistical source for some threads (mostly Pro/anti CI arguments).

Part of the problem with getting accurate data is defining what it "deaf" and that is "hard of hearing." Because there are no standard definitions and people label themselves in a subjective manner, it's hard to get accurate data.
