Sept. 11 victims pursue bin Laden family fortune - Yahoo! News

- As the United States continues its long manhunt for Osama bin Laden, victims of Sept. 11 are in the midst of their own bin Laden pursuit: for his family's vast fortune.

Victims and survivors of the 2001 attack and insurance companies say the bin Laden family failed to cut off ties with their infamous relative after learning he was devising terrorism plots and should be held liable for hundreds of millions of dollars in damages.

Lawyers for the victims and survivors argued Thursday that the family members are getting off easy in defending against the claims that they turned a blind eye to his evil ways after learning of his terroristic leanings in 1993.

The lawyers asked a judge in U.S. District Court in Manhattan to let them seek more information to prove their claim. Their lawsuit targets the Saudi Binladin Group, along with numerous banks, charities and individuals worldwide, alleging that they provided material support and assistance to al-Qaida before Sept. 11.

The Saudi Binladin Group is a construction and engineering company that has expansive holdings in the Middle East. Osama bin Laden once owned a small stake in the company.

The victims and survivors suffered a setback last month when U.S. Magistrate Judge Frank Maas turned down many of the requests for more information about the financial ties between bin Laden and his family, saying, in essence, that the plaintiffs had become petty in their requests.

Lawyers for the Saudi Binladin Group have said in court papers that bin Laden's 2 percent shares in the company and another firm, the Mohammad Binladin Co., were sold in June 1993 and put into a trust.

The judge issued his findings on May 21, giving the Saudi Binladin Group one month to produce documents which would show the receipt and subsequent disposition of any dividends, distributions or similar payments arising out of bin Laden's shares of the company between 1993 and 2000.

But he said he believed discovery in the case "must have boundaries," especially given the lengthy amount of time it had taken the case to proceed.

Further requests would likely be denied unless there are "truly exceptional circumstances," he wrote. "Simply put, we are reaching the end of the line."

The lawyers for Sept. 11 victims cited a 1997 interview in which bin Laden briefly discussed nine visits by his family, including his mother, an uncle and several brothers.

The lawyers said the interview showed that the relationship between bin Laden and his family was cordial, "implying that representatives of his family remained sympathetic to his situation and mission after 1993."

In their own court papers, lawyers for the Saudi Binladin Group had accused the plaintiffs of "wishful thinking" and "wild speculation."

The lawyers said the Saudi Binladin Group had helped the United States, building the air base from which U.S. forces operated during the first Gulf War.

The Sept. 11 commission also concluded that the Sudanese government seized bin Laden assets when he left the Sudan in 1996.

As to his shares or the proceeds of them, the lawyers wrote: "Osama bin Laden never received any buyout payment and has never had access to these funds."

I remember reading that the bin Laden family froze his portion of their wealth so he couldn't access it. I reckon they should give his portion to the 9-11 survivors. I'm sure many of the sick survivors will need the money for medical care.

Really sad...

Bin Laden talked a lot but deny his responsible for 9/11... *sigh*

Interesting, I didn't know about that... If it's really true then why can't bin Laden's family accept the responsible and pay victim survivors the claim?

Interesting! I read internet last few month ago, Bush President was friend with Bin Laden in NYC about 1972. It maybe suspect they involved happened 9/11?

But..... Bush DENIED!

Yes, Bush were friends with Bin Laden before 9/11, also Saddam, too.

It is really sad.

Continues? I very highly doubt it. I believe the government and the military has already let him go.

Why? because if we were still manhunting him, we would've already caught him, as it only took us half a year to manhunt Saddam and as for Bin Laden, never been caught or seen ever since.

Think about this...before that day, most of us didnt really know who is bin laden is, but ever since that day hits, he was all over the news assuming that he is responsible for the attacks so I wondered to myself...how do they really know all this info? Why throw so much information that is so complicated and fishy to the public? Same with Saddam, but I doubt he has anything to do with the attacks...surely saddam and bin laden are our enemies and have hatred for America but is there seriously such proof of their being involved in such tasks like this? Ever since that day when we went to war, and former secteray of state Powell gave us a speech on Saddam's plans related to "nuclear bombing" is SO old news...it sounds like something u would hear from an action packed thriller where a hero comes saves the day against terrorists like "Die Hard" or "True Lies" or whatever...everything they tell us, about the middle east, bin laden, saddam, George Bush, etc...they havent really shown us anything that would make us really believe with our own eyes. Ever since 9/11th, we tracked down and searched for bin laden in Afhagstian (sp?) and afew years later, we actually went to war against Iraq so I find that puzzling why Iraq? All these years now, it has come to my understanding that the war is nothing but another waste of time and we arent even fighting for our country. we are fighting for oil! thousands of our men and women died over something so vaulable like black gold is definetly the stupidest story I ever heard.

Something is definetly fishy, and I wouldnt be surprised if the government had anything to do with the attacks back then.

maybe. maybe not. I think he is hiding in Pakistan. That's the big thing - We can't get into Pakistan. If I recalled correctly, the sympathizers in Pakistan troops allowed him to slip away into Pakistan territory from American troops who were chasing right behind him. Pakistan government is roadblocking us to find him.

:gpost: It's an exactly what I feeling the same. We debated in 9/11 threads... ADers from different countries know more than some American ADers about 9/11 issues.

I know Colin Powell urged to stop Bush for send soliders to Iraq war soon after Saddam's execution.
