Another barrier in the fight for gay rights just came crashing down in NYC.

NYC's 1st openly gay high school

First public gay high school to open in NYC

NEW YORK (AP) -- New York City is creating the nation's first public high school for gays, bisexuals and transgender students.

The Harvey Milk High School will enroll about 100 students and open in a newly renovated building in the fall. It is named after San Francisco's first openly gay city supervisor, who was assassinated in 1978.

"I think everybody feels that it's a good idea because some of the kids who are gays and lesbians have been constantly harassed and beaten in other schools," Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Monday. "It lets them get an education without having to worry."

The school is an expansion of a two-classroom public school program that began in 1984. A gay-rights youth advocacy group, the Hetrick-Martin Institute, has managed and financed the program since its inception.

The new school's principal, William Salzman, said the school will be academically challenging and will follow mandatory English and math programs. It also will specialize in computer technology, arts and culinary arts.

State Conservative Party Chairman Mike Long criticized the creation of the school.

"Is there a different way to teach homosexuals? Is there gay math? This is wrong," Long said. "There's no reason these children should be treated separately."

The Hetrick-Martin Institute's Web site says the school will give its students "an opportunity to obtain a secondary education in a safe and supportive environment. ... We believe that success requires the ability to respect and value the diverse human community."

THATS intresting and iM amazed abt the creation, i dont know what to say or HOW to say this but important thing is, poeple do have thier rights to decide on what education or what respectivity there is.......

Kewlies...even though I'm not a lesbian myself, still I have heaps of mates who are gay/lesbian...I think this is great news for future generations of gay/lesbian kids. They won't have to worry about taunts and being bullied due to their sexuality.

Homosexual High

AUSTIN, Texas - New York is home to the nation's first homosexual high school, which will begin tutoring 100 students starting in September.
Backed by Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Harvey Milk High School is named after the openly gay San Francisco politician who was assassinated in 1978. Milk High is expected to gulp more than $3 million in taxpayers' money to renovate the school so it can handle 170 students by September 2004.

Advocates say the East Village school, an expansion of a program in operation since 1984, will afford gays, lesbians and transgendered students an opportunity to learn free from the kind of discrimination and harassment they often face in regular public schools.

"Everybody feels that it's a good idea because some of the kids who are gay and lesbian have been constantly harassed and beaten in other schools," Bloomberg said.

Opponents don't see the logic behind funding a public school exclusively for homosexuals.

"Is there a different way to teach homosexuals?" said Mike Long, state conservative party chairman. "Is there gay math? This is wrong."

While an attempt to foster a discrimination-free environment for homosexuals is laudable, Milk High is turning back the clock. The earlier homosexual students are exposed to diversity, the better prepared they will be for taking on an American society in which they are a minority. Proponents of the school have said it's a model for the country and the world to follow. But segregating homosexuals from the rest of society only fosters an environment of ignorance, which leads to crippling stereotypes and labels.

Harvey Milk is known for breaking down the "closet homosexual" mystique. The Harvey Milk Institute lauds him for "successfully integrating people and politics across diverse boundaries." Creating an alternative high school strictly for homosexuals is contrary to Milk's hard-fought ideals.

By further segregating students, Milk High School only throws more mystique on homosexual culture and augments societal estrangement for its students.

im all for it! :thumb:

i think its a great idea especially for the kids who has a history of being taunted and beaten up at their local schools and want to have an education without worry of being beaten up and make it thru high school -- it should be a choice given to the kids if they want to go to Harvey Milk HS or go to their local HS -- the choice is theirs and theirs alone as i believe the teens are old enuf to make their own decisions after discussing with their parents (if in the case theyre already out and miserable at their local HS) -- i personally dont believe EVERY gay HS students in NY would go to the Harvey Milk HS -- some may choose to stay at their local HS cuz they already have the acceptance there and/or a support system in place there -- id say wait a few years and see how it goes -- what Milk HS offers for the kids are great!!

todays gays and lesbain kids are very lucky in NY and i commend NY for thier efforts to reduce the voilence and the taunting from the local highschools, as long as they know there is support whereever they are, the GBLT teen clubs and boys and girls clubs that avdovcates the GBLTs teens, its a wonderful step to take, screw the poltics who think that each subjects are related to * gay math* that wasn't the issue the issue IMO is less violence more acceptance. And this is great for the kids.. like fly free says the GBLTs teens can decide weather to go to that school or stay in thier local schools if they have been accepted and not bullied or taunted.

I think it's a great opportunity for all gay/lesbian children to get together at Milk High School. This is just like School for the Deaf, everyone get together and socializing in same culture so that way they feel they're just like everyone else.
I doubt there'll be troubles/riot at the school because its located in NYC, where all cultures blended in. NYC ROCKS!

actually, you only have a right to have an opinion, not a right to post it here! you're free to shout your opinions as loud as you want on your property. when you go to other people's property, that "freedom of speech" becomes restricted to complying with the rules established by the owner.

no one is stupid OK u can refrain from insulting poeple please, if u have a plm with the mods u are more than welcome to PM them. We re ALLOWED to make mistakes. so please think of that as a human error not an insult ok ? thank u

well, i simply posted my opinion about they shouldn't set up the gay h.s. bec people who dislike gay and would wait outside for students to finish school and follow them to somewhere and kill them or stalk them. OR parents feel embrassed bec people laugh at them that their kids attend gay h.s.

they deleted my post...it's not simple insults...just my opinion. i don't hate gay people bec my bro is one of them. my bro is gay. so you mods, just don't fuckin' around with my posts.

i told my bro about it and my bro said he understands my opinion. he supports my side and he said it's so hard for him to admit he is gay while back in h.s. he knew he would get more stalks or people would harss him so he held his secert till he graduated h.s. and few years later, he admitted it. he said he hopes gay h.s. would be doing fine without any plm from other people who dislike gay.

I really don't know what's going on....but it definately doesn't look like your post really belong here in this thread because it's unrelated to this school topic.

If you got an opinion..you gotta to shout it in a way where people would know that without getting some feelings hurt. If you can't do that...that's known as harrassing other members when you make offensive insults. Just state your opinions without the insults..and I doubt the mods would bother with your posts.

I hope that I can read your opinions with no worries about other people getting offended. Everyone is entitled to post an opinion here on this board as long as it doesn't break any of the AD rules. Take care.

vvti thats a good opioion and i dont see any offense right there, u had ur thoughts abt it and i respect that. there will always be a pros and cons of the certain issues and u do have the right to post that opioion. BUT if it was a degrading opioion then theres a fine line where it would be removed. BUT this posting u made just now that was a good opioion not ALL poeple will be supportive of the school and it's a respectful opioion. I for one support it,( the gay school that is) not all would agree so thats alright :)
