When people think of sex trafficking, they typically consider it to be an issue that occurs outside of the United States. However, it’s a form of modern day slavery that exists throughout our country. Most Americans aren’t even aware of how serious of a problem it actually is.

Runaway and homeless youth are regularly targeted by sex traffickers, often using the promise of fast income and a better life to lure them in to the darkness. Once a victim is brought into the sex slave trade, they are forced against their will through a variety of control tactics to solicit their bodies to complete strangers (who are often white, middle-class men with families).

While many of these victims are never rescued from their horrific circumstances and rehabilitated, there are some who are lucky enough to escape a life of slavery.

Recently, the mother of a runaway teenager went to extremes in order to save her daughter from a sex trafficking ring in Washington.

Police say the men were using craigslist and the marketing website backpage.com to sell girls for sex. The three traffickers were operating their business using various motels throughout Olympia, Everett and Tacoma.

When a mother of one of the victim’s discovered her daughter’s photo on one of the sites, she was determined to get her daughter back.

It’s a parent’s worst nightmare: finding your child on a sex trafficking website.

“She really kind of did her own sting and located the hotel they were using and set up a ‘meet’ and recovered her daughter,” said Lt. Ron Mead of WSP Missing and Exploited Children’s Task Force.

Instead of letting the police conduct a sting operation to rescue the girl, she called the listed number and asked what kind of services she could get for $200. The response? “Good sex.”

Then, she was told where to go.

The mother was able to locate and free her daughter and afterward alert police of the suspects’ location. Curtis Escalonte, 23, and Michael Williams, 22, were arrested and charged with numerous sex-related offenses. Their bail was set at $2 million.

A third suspect later turned himself in to police.

“As a result of that contact, had it not been for the mother’s involvement, we certainly wouldn’t have been aware of it as quickly as we were and may not have been aware of it all,” Mead said.

I wish the police was not involved... rather - uncles, cousins, and friends to apprehend them. a good beatdown is a good justice.

That was one very lucky girl and what a brave mom. @ Jiro that would be very risky , the thugs could come back and shot the whole family .

oh and just want to add one more thing - typically for an organized crime... gunning down the whole family would be very foolish for them because it would attract attention to all 3-letters agencies which can easily shut down the entire operation.

only low-level thugs and small timers who do not think before they act would gun them down. sex trafficking operation is actually very organized and sophisticated but it lies on a very thin thread. gunning down a family would cut that thread but unfortunately there will be a new thread after a given time.

Sorry did not mean to like :/ keeps getting me...
Am curious about something...kinda on and off topic... legalized prostitution.... if prostitution was legalized do you think to would cause an impact to human trafficking or would they just move their nitch to kids...

Yeah but this does not sound like a well organized gang.

there are many places for legalized/unenforced prostitution so why human trafficking still exists?

human trafficking mostly caters to pedophiles and sickos at sick level. those sickos won't get what they want from "legalized prostitution" - sex slaves. sex torture. etc.

Kids are being kidnapped to sold into sex rings all over the world right. And parents are being told their kids will be going to school and getting a good education . Sadly the parents never see their child again .
I think it was Ann Curry that did a documentary on child sex rings , it was
so hard to watch but it showed men flying to other counties to rape little girls .

Agreed it does not stop sickos... but it does limit human trafficking issues in those areas, it also decreases sex offences and violence... and has the benefit happier old men :D
