Microsoft’s Kinect technology, already adept at reading hand and body movements, is incorporating sign language into its motion-sensing vocabulary as part of a new research project meant to help the deaf.

These devices are expensive, with the cameras costing over $1,600. Make ASL program on it not yet?
 
Very interesting. Yes, I can see potential for the software.

It still has a ways to go. Clearly, the signers and speakers in this demonstration have to sign/speak very slowly and clearly, and be patient with each other during the conversation.

The demonstration uses Chinese sign language. I'm not sure if their non-manual markers are as important to understanding as they are in ASL. That could make a difference in accuracy of translation.

Still, it's an impressive start.

Hardware goes down in price quicker than proprietary software. Some exceptions are when they are bundled together as a package. Also, the size of the market for new technology drives the prices. If the market is small or specialized, sometimes the prices stay high.

Apple's software price down to free and Apple's hardware price still same. Well. Almost. Hmm.

For processors, RAMs, HDDs, SSDs, Flash usb, etc. Yep price always go down. Thanks to Moore's law.

you are not paying for hardware.... you are paying for premium.
