***This happened in Australia...thought you'd be interested. :) ***

Talk of lesbians and gay relationships spiced up an otherwise dull debate on the intricacies of superannuation law in the Senate.

Senators have the Labor Party, backed by the Greens and Democrats, to thank for sprucing up the dialogue.

Labor was seeking equal rights for access to superannuation for gay and lesbian couples.

But that didn't please Tasmanian independent Brian Harradine.

He opposed opposition efforts to allow partners of deceased gays and lesbians to automatically inherit their superannuation.

"Take two women for example. You've got two women living in one household, one of whom is a dependent and you've got in another household you've got two lesbians," Senator Harradine explained.

"What is being proposed by those that are putting this forward is to discriminate against the two women who aren't lesbians.

"Now how do you get over that?

"What you're proposing for us to do is to discriminate against those two women because they're not having sex.

"I think that that's disgraceful if we're going to be asked to do that."

What really bothered the senator was that any move to give same sex couples equal rights would place them on par with heterosexual married couples.

Gay activist and Democrats Senator Brian Greig raised Senator Harradine's ire when he argued same sex couples should have the right to marry.

"I argue that a long term same sex couple ... is no different to a marriage and there ought to be an opportunity for same sex couples to marry," Senator Greig said.

In what was described as an historic breakthrough, the Labor amendment passed the Senate by one vote.

But it faces rejection when it returns to the House of Representatives.

Labor's retirement savings spokesman Nick Sherry said the laws had to be changed because the government had no right to interfere in the property rights of individuals.

"It is their financial property and therefore fail to see why the state, that is the government should be effectively interfering in the property rights of individuals, in this case same sex couples," he said.

Gay Greens Senator Bob Brown said the vote was a historic moment for same sex couples.

The government said the amendment was irrelevant to the superannuation bills being debated.

ABT damn time Aussie is part of the crowd as well why don't USA and ALL OVER the world do the same and just HUSH abt it we re all one and the same!

Is superannuation the same thing as civil unions that are practiced in Dean Country (Vermont) or is it full marriage rights for gays and lesbians in Australia?

Just wondering cuz I never heard of that word until ya posted this news waterrats.

I only know of Netherlands, Beligum and BC and Ontario granting full marriage rights to gay and lesbians in the world. The rest is just civil unions. Demand nothing but the best, people! *chant chant*

I don't see how a civil union is good enough... demand for full marriage rights, you all deserve it!

Winning gay marriage rights in Ontario (where I live) is a pretty big landmark event.

Some places in the world, it may be impossible to get the name of "gay marriage" but just about stomachable to pass legislation under "civil union". This can be a mixed bag. Does one want to keep protesting for years (possibly decades) for the name of "marriage", or settle for "civil unions".

Generally, I don't mind civil unions as long as it's full equal rights of marriage, just a different name. Just as "male" and "female" are different words for humans, "marriage" and "civil unions" should have have equal rights in some of the places that do civil unions.

I feel any nation with "civil unions" should be able to immigrate to another nation just like a married couple. (At least among nations supporting gay marriage/civil unions) In one country, you may be a "civil union" but travel to another country that has gay marriage, you're already considered a "married couple" under their own laws.

The reality of civil unions is more murky than that, but in the long run I hope that "civil unions" would just be another way of describing a gay version of "marriage", both with equal rights.

Superannuation is the same as your pension plans. What u save for your retirement over your working life.

Brian Harridine [whatever his name is] is just a dried up old prune with no life.

If u think Yankee pollies are the pits, try the Aussie ones for size. they just love slumming it in slime. Our pollies are pure justification for bringing back snuff :rifle: movies starring them! <thumbs up from an Aussie>

No, deafbrutha already answered it for me. :P Sorry, I didn't get an email notification about this, forgot to turn it on. :P

I think it is getting better, they will die off eventually and they will have discover the irony that there is a big population of homosexuals whom I bet they think is straight....... this reminds me of that senator who wrote that bill against gay marriage because his son was gay......I was like that is so stupid that he wanted to get "revenge" or prevent his son from being a same sex marriage
