According to the National Center for Health Statistics of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, approximately 34 million Americans have a significant hearing loss; of these almost six million are profoundly deaf.
With such a large deaf population, many hearing people either have, at some time, come into personal contact with a deaf person or, through television, have been exposed to deaf people such as deaf actress, Marlee Matlin; Heather Whitestone McCallum, the first deaf Miss America; Deanne Bray, from Sue Thomas, F. B. Eye; and Survivor—The Amazon star Christy Smith. On the other hand, a deaf person comes into contact with hearing people every day. How are they affected?
For deaf people, the journey through life oftentimes is controlled by the barriers set up by the world around them. This world seems to close in on them as they are pressured to conform to the language and culture of hearing individuals.
In an effort to educate people and foster an understanding between the Deaf and hearing communities, Deaf Understanding has released a new book, by deaf author Blair LaCrosse, and interpreter, Michelle LaCrosse, entitled Silent Ears, Silent Heart—A deaf man’s journey through two worlds.
