This is chilling:

Just some excerpts:

FBI agent: Dylann Roof reached out to other white supremacists before church shooting

. . . Prosecutors also introduced a disturbing jailhouse journal found in Roof cell just six weeks after the shooting in which he drew white supremacist symbols, doubled down on his racist ideologies and sought to set the record straight about his motivations and actions.

“I would like to make it crystal clear I do not regret what I did. I am not sorry. I have not shed a tear for the innocent people I killed,” he wrote.

Lauren Knapp, an intelligence officer with the Charleston County Sheriff's Office, told a federal jury that officials decided to search Roof's solitary cell after she came across the letter from the 22-year-old white supremacist while screening mail at the county jail.

The two-page letter stood out because it contained sections that did not appear to be in normal handwriting. She searched online and saw the writings were from a book related to the so-called "Werther effect," a term applied to suicide contagion.

In his cell, investigators found a batch of racist, xenophobic and homophobic writings and drawings that railed against Jews, Hispanics, blacks, gays and others. This new manifesto built on earlier writings he posted online just hours before the mass shooting. Roof wrote that he felt the need to complete his thoughts because he had been in a rush that day. . .

Roof also dismissed accounts that he had a troubled childhood. Being a child of divorce did not scar him, he stated. "I had everything I needed and then some," he wrote.

Roof cautioned people against seeking deeper meaning in his words or actions. For example, he stated that he never used drugs to drown his pain or self-medicate. "I used drugs to get high. There is no deeper meaning to this."

That, Roof said, is why he so dislikes psychology, which he belittled as a way for people to invent fictitious diseases to explain away actions.

"I also, like many other people, find it pleasurable to be sad," he wrote. "I get off on it."

From the impact statement by the son of one of the victims:

. . . The Rev. Daniel Simmons Sr. also was a wounded Army veteran who normally carried a pistol and had a concealed weapons permit. When his son heard about the shooting at Emanuel AME, he thought of that gun and his father’s protective nature.

“Why didn’t he protect everyone?” Simmons wondered.

When police released his father’s car from the crime scene, Simmons found the gun sitting on the front seat of his father’s car.

:(

Agree with you, Reba...and he looks like a 14-15 year old kid at 22 years old. a high school drop out. Wondering if his upbringing had a lot to do with this also.... He's mentally ill, no doubt, and facing the death sentence.
Mentally ill? No, he is not. He just hates black people. It's a hate crime. What's more, Reba's post (#217) mentioned that the judge ruled that he could act as his own attorney since he's not mentally ill.

The point is that if he's mentally ill, would the judge allow him to act as his own attorney? I doubt it. If he's not that sick, his lawyer(s) didn't recommend it anyway because they believed that he was sick (they lied, of course - many lawyers do) and they were looking for the attention obviously ($$$).

*welcome back!*....If he's not mentally ill after shooting all these innocent people (who most likely never did a thing to him)....then he has a twisted mind-set....I don't foresee how anyone in their right minds would shoot people for no reason but they are Black....and feel his upbringing had a lot to do with it. Some people are born with no conscience too.

There are several different aspects of mental status in the law.

A defendant can be mentally ill and still mentally competent for trial.

There are many (probably most) mentally ill people who don't commit crimes.

There are perfectly sane people who commit horrendous crimes.

There are mentally ill people who commit crimes and are sane enough to stand trial.

The thing is, medically diagnosed mental illness is not the same as criminally insane, and neither is the same as mental competence for trial.

Someone could be a total sociopath or psychopath but still be mentally competent to stand trial or perform their own defense.

This is why the courts keep having all these competency hearings.

Some of the relevant laws:

http://www.scstatehouse.gov/code/t17c024.php

Definition:

Competency to Stand Trial

According to the Dusky Standard, Competency means the defendant “has sufficient present ability to consult with his lawyer with a reasonable degree of rational understanding and whether he has a rational as well as a factual understanding of the proceedings against him.”

Personally, I believe Roof is evil.

Welcome back to AD forum, also RR is happy to see you again.

His IQ is higher enough to be competent in trial, despite about his mental illness, also many people have mental illness like depression and anxiety - that's most common but it isn't enough to avoid the trial due to unfit to defend yourself.

Roof got everything what he wants - lock up in prison and get death penalty soon but victims want him to lock up in prison to suffer enough because death penalty will going be easy for him to avoid the suffer in prison. He will going be harshly knocked out and die in prison as pay to victims that Roof killed black people in the church.

I dunno. Mind you, I am still not sure if the Manchurian Candidate is evil. Hah.
But seriously, I just don't know. Just look at it now, one shoots up a church and he is the devil and the other shoots up the airport (death penalty) and he is a vet.
I am not gonna bother looking at the mixed signals. It makes me too dizzy.

We have Roof's own confession and statements. He's condemned by his own words. We don't yet know much about the airport shooter, and we don't have any statements by him. Those aren't mixed signals. They are totally unrelated cases.

Ah? So one is Muslim extremism and the other isn't? Perhaps I am just imagining coincidences. Ah well.

Well, Roof is a white supremacist racist, not a Muslim. Not sure yet about the Fort Lauderdale shooter. The Roof case is over a year in progress, so there is a lot of info out on him. The Fort Lauderdale guy, Santiago, has only been in the news for two days, so not much info yet. I don't see any coincidence.

I didn't know that KKK and white supremacists switched to Muslim and we would see more mosques over southern states.

The airport shooter is not Muslim. He was born and raised in Puerto Rico so I am assuming he is Hispanic.

Correct.

Correct that he isn't Muslim but only 'had thought in his head related to ISIS..." No proven connection otherwise

He was actually born in New Jersey but moved to Puerto Rico when he was 2. He was living in Anchorage after he was discharged from the military.

That was my point. Both obsessed over their respective sites and both had extreme actions. No proof, etcetera, but one can read between the lines. *shrug*

Dylann Roof has been sentenced to death, becoming the first to get the death penalty for federal hate crimes.
