About a month ago our beautiful 2-month old niece, Akayla Hayward-Semenoff, suffered a seizure and was rushed to the hospital. The seizures continued at the hospital and it was found that Akayla had swelling on the brain due to internal bleeding. Because of this, our darling Akayla had to be operated on in the hopes of draining the fluid and reducing the swelling on the brain.
Following the operation, Akayla fell into a coma and the doctors said it could be months before she recovered and that there was a high chance of major brain damage.
Baby Akayla had been in and out of the doctors and hospitals for the past couple of months yet doctors failed to diagnose the problem until the seizures happened.
Fortunately, to the amazement of those involved, Akayla came out of her coma and began to recover much better than expected. However, there is still a very long road ahead of her and only time will tell the extent of the damage that has occurred.
Prior to all of this, Akayla’s father Anaru had finished at his job to move himself, his partner April and their children to be by Anaru’s older sister in Perth. The night before they were to depart on their journey, Akayla suffered her first seizure and was rushed to Westmead Hospital.
The doctors are now shifting the blame onto these two loving parents. Both Anaru & April are deaf, and to add to the injustice of this whole painful process, an interpreter was not provided until the meeting to tell them that their children would be taken. Unfortunately this meant that they didn’t fully realize what was happening until it was too late. All this has culminated in a heart-breaking situation that, for now, means little Akayla and her 5-year old brother Asher have been put into foster care awaiting the outcome of what could be very long court proceedings.
Anaru and April were observed by professionals at the hospital and it was their (the professionals) opinion that they were not to blame but still their children were taken. As any parent can imagine, they are hurting deeply.
