There are about 20 of these trees in the neighborhood street behind me, I never knew what they were called until now.

Those little spikes hurt the most when they are green, contrary to being dried brown! We used to throw those at each other as kids.. We called them grenades or some kind of bomb.
 
Oh, I've seen those too! I never knew they were called gumball trees. Cool, I learned something new!
 
I have one sweet gum tree in my back yard. The dried brown balls fall down on the ground from the tree. I have been raking the brown balls and put them in the bags. That's why I don't like the sweet gum tree.
 
That is interesting. I was actually born in Arkansas, but left before I was aware of anything. And having lived most of my life in west Texas and Iowa, I just have been out of the range.

When I lived in Richmond, Va there were a lot of gumball trees where I lived. My dad hated stepping on gumballs so he cut down the tree.
