Behavior meeting went VERY well...

Because of Chris' lack of communication skills at school it has caused him to become more frustrated then normal 4 year olds. Back in November he got so bad that the teacher was in fear of him hurting himself or other children. So they brought in a behavior specialist to help. We had the inital meeting today. What made the meeting exciting was all the HOH specialist that was there. My parent advicate (she's and interputer), his speech and developmental therapist there, the teacher from the Deaf Ed classroom, another HOH specialist and of course me (his dad was too busy to attend..go figure). But anyways the people that specializes in the HOH/deaf community came up with lots of suggestions and good ones to!

I also found out from the Deaf Ed teacher is that Chris is eligable to attend school in her class room next year and will help me with the transion part of it and make sure he gets what I feel he need:)..Finally I have people on my side when it comes to his education and signing!!

I am glad for you. I had many problems with communication too and did not talk until I was five.

I would say see, look how well I turned out, but then that might get people saying, "don't worry he won't turn out like Bott!":P

But I do think things will just get better for you.

I am so glad. I have fought many battles for him to get people to understand that using sign along side oral. I think the people who were against using sign is getting a clue..well then again not b/c the one girl didn't say a word through the whole thing....lol
 
One thing bad about it was that since dad didn't show up I was asked many times if I told him. It was suggested that we have the same rules and schedules at each of our houses and that the mid week visitation should end. but if I tell him that he'll think I'm full of shit

Excellent!
The mainstream can be good for kids who just need very minimal accomondations, but most dhh or other kids with classic disabilites need a base of seperate education. Thing is, the mainstream proponets mean well, but they don't understand that most of the training that even sped teachers get is in how to educate LD kids.
 
I am pushing for him to get the main "subjects" like reading, writing..etc in the deaf ed and the others like PE, art and music in the regular Kindergarten room

Are you in touch with your state's School for the Deaf? I am so psyched that Chris is getting a chance to experiance Deaf Ed. Most hoh kids don't really get a chance to experiance Deaf ed. Deaf ed tends to be really good at the early end of the spectrum.
 
Now we aren't members of anything (yet), and I do get advise from our state school of the deaf. That school is 4-5 hours away so we do emails and sometimes she'll drive up for his IEP meetings to make sure everything is legal.
 
That's awesome that you're hooked up with the state school for the Deaf. I really do think that the Deaf Schools tend to be really underutilized as a resource and placement option. Especially for hoh kids!
I'm so envious of Chris having the Deaf Ed option. Hopefully you'll be able to keep him in a split placement until he's old enough to give good feedback about what educational placement he really thrives in.
I think that most parents of kids with more classic special needs need to do a split placement. It's assumed that mainstreaming is always the best placement. It isn't always. It does seem like the kids who really thrive in the mainstream (regular classes regular school) tend to be the kids who probaly would have been sucessful anyway even before mainstreaming became popular.
Trust me, it can be so beyond frustrating dealing with mainstream special ed people. You practically have to be a disabilty law lawyer in order to get any accomondations beyond minimal "free and appropreate"
Not to mention that hopefully he'll escape a lot of emotional damage from the mainstream. (remember even a lot of sucessful mainstreamed kids have signifcent social problems) Here is the site for the American Society for Deaf Children:

Wow thank you so much for the web links. I will atleast keep in in the Deaf Ed for Kindergarten and then go from there. He's been in Pre K this year and really hasn't gained alot from it. So I'll be able to tell if there's a difference in him or not.
 
Sounds great! How did you manage to pull that off, though (the use of sign along with oral part)? What sign system is used there if I may ask?
 
I've only learned specific words haven't learned how to put them in sentence form, so right now as I talk when I come across words that we know in sign I sign that word. I am going to take ASL in April so I can learn the grammer part. The school that he will be attending suggest me to learn the ASL then using PSE (?) when I'm talking to him or teaching him to read.

Ok, I'll ask again although it is probably not a big deal, my question was: How was it you were able to get the school to add sign to the oral teachings? Reason I ask is because, the two philosophies are directly at odds with one another and vehemently so......

oh okay sorry I misunderstood. He's in Pre K which isn't techinally apart of the school just uses one of their rooms. Second of all my middle son had the same teacher last year when we found out about Chris' hearing and she showed a huge amount of support in us teaching Chris to sign. She said she will also learn it so that she can communicate with him. She has even put up more visial aids around the room (more then she had last year) with pictures of the sign for that aid. She doesn't "know" how to sign she is learning what we are. I make copies of the flash cards we get each week and give it to her and show her how to do the same. I know that we are extremely lucky to have a teacher like her and I know they won't all be like that as he goes through school. But I am very thankful for her and her support.

Ok, gotcha now. I can see the teacher is a nurturing and well-intended person and if there are no better formal programs in your area, the current situation will have to suffice.
