A working life or SSI / disability support, what is it for you?

American is a democracy in a Republic. In a republic/democracy every person is responsibile for himself or herself and their own offspring - providing for their own needs and wants. It is not the governments responsibility to take care of anyone especially those who refuse to take responsibility for themselves.
Of course there are exceptions - the elderly and very ill who cannot work are taken care of, and somewhat controversial is taking care of the scads of children people have but refuse to provide for.
I guess you may not understand if yours is a socialist country because your people would not necessarily have to take care of themselves. Here you are supposed to take responsibility for you and yours and if you need help you can get it, but you should be doing everything you can to take care of yourself first.
Sadly though there are many who are generational welfare abusers - Grandma had kid after kid and collected welfare and her kids never tried to do anything but collect their welfare and have kid after kid and so on - Who pays? The few people who work hard, pay taxes, etc.

Here people refuse to take responsibilty when they can work and produce and achieve and choose not to. They choose to have children they do not take care of and so on.

I guess I do not understand socialism. I would not want someone telling me how much money I can make, what job I can do, how to raise my children, how many I can have or not have, etc.

Here in America every person has rights but they also have responsibilities.
The American people are awfully fond of shouting about their rights but very slow about accepting their responsibilities as citizens.

Who pays for the benefits people get in your country?

The more I reread my post the more I am convinced I did a poor job of explaining what I mean by responsibilities.

*On a personal note: My DH - ran256 - was stationed in Germany in the military. He has a deep fondness for Germany and talks about the German family who adopted him while he was serving and how beautiful the mountains and castles are. He hopes to come back some day.

Right now Im having health problems and I am working but heres the kicker - I do not qualify for insurance for six months at my company - so until I get insurance the local hospital wont help me.

I think there should be a TEMPORARY insurance program that if you show proof that you are working you are eligible for the TEMPORARY INSURANCE PROGRAM - that requires you to report any changes MONTHLY. If you fail to report for that month you lose it, you have to reapply and get re-approved. You cannot use this insurance for no longer than six months from the hire date at your workplace. Most companies give employees insurance at 90 days, some give them insurance after 6 months.

If you quit your job before you are eligible for company insurance you have to repay whatever insurance costs you had used. If you keep your job through for a full 12 months - you owe nothing. The insurance could be set up like this: State pays half - you pay half. Anything costing more than $200 - the state pays its half and the hospital/clinic must establish a payment plan so that you can pay your half of the bill off. The state takes out $20/wk of your paycheck to pay for the insurance.

This way everyone gets insurance but it also encourages people to work and not mooch off the welfare system. They have rights but they are also given their responsibilities as citizens.
