DETROIT (WJBK) - A woman says she was robbed at a gas station in Detroit but did not get any help from employees, even after they realized she was deaf and could not call 911 herself.

Shakira Magee says she was waiting a gas station on Telegraph and Six Mile roads for a nearby store to open when a man came up and tried to speak with her. She motioned she could not hear him since she was deaf, and says he smiled and walked away. She continued texting but says the man came back, pushed her, grabbed her phone and took off in a car.

She remembers crying and asking for help. She wrote a note to the clerk asking him to call 911, but says he kind of shrugged her off even though she made it very apparent she needed help.

The manager at the gas station, Souna Hadi, tells FOX 2's Robin Murdoch the clerk did not call 911 because Magee left before he could get her contact information.

Magee admits she walked home scared and confused, and wanted to hurry home because she did not know if the man was coming back. She says she never reported the incident because she feared police wouldn't find it important.

Hadi says the incident is on surveillance video and will release the footage when a police report has been made.

In the end, Magee hopes awareness will come from this.

"Why didn't someone step up and help me and just call the police? It's as simple as dialing the phone," she says.

The manager at the gas station says they keep a notebook behind the counter in case of a situation like this. He adds his employee was overwhelmed by what was happening at the time and they all plan to learn from this.

That is terrible! :(

Yes , what I find terrible was how stupid the woman is. She never called the cops and her car and phone was stolen. She thought the cops would not think it was importance , how dumb is that. I feel bad that she was robbed but only up to a certain point.

I don't know what brand name of her phone. if having iPhone, police can track it to find where.

The jerk that stole her car know where the woman live , I bet she has her
car registration in the glove box. This is why I can't believe she did not report this to the cops. And the jerk know she is deaf too and if her house keys where with the cars keys the person could come right the house at middle of the night. I hope she had new locks put in if the house keys where stolen too. I guess if people own a popular car to steal they should keep their house keys on another chain.

The man approached her while she is type a texting. He tried to speak to her but she told him she can't hear. It made him smile and walk away and saw her continue with texting. He thought she is going to call police then push her down and took her cellphone away and fled. I don't know what brand of cellphone she used. She should report what is kind of brand she is using. Your right. She should report to police about her car slote. She need to know better.

Yeah, I wonder what kind of 'smile' the guy gave her and if was smiling at her or smiling b/c he found an easy target .

It does not say her car was stolen. Just her phone. Said that the man took her phone and took off in a car.

"She says she never reported the incident because she feared police wouldn't find it important." Meaning just the phone. If it were her car, she'd not think that way.

Ok , I misread it . But it's to bad she did not call cops right away.

Correct...(I was about to say that)....This happened in Detroit...crime is rampant there....and everywhere else it seems too....

Me too. I was wondering that robber took advantage of her because she is deaf and can't heard. He motivated to target on her after typing a text messages. He thought she is going to call police but not. That is sad. She is scared.

reviewing the video....her phone (as she said) cost $300.00....can't undy WHY per parents let her go to that gas station/store so early in the AM (before it opened....no lights outside or in)....with a $300.00 phone....that she was texting on....

that's bad... I don't go to gas station that much I don't drive.. but sometimes I get a drink then leave.. :) but now that is happening so I think I will look somewhere else.. ;) but people can steal iPhone or iPads in bus or anywhere.. gonna be careful where u go :)

That is right. I don't drive but my husband is driver. He always locked the door car before go to gas station. Sometime my husband and and I go to station to get more drink and snacks and he always locked the car. When he is pump his gas and always locked the door to prevent of someone sneak out and grab the purse out from vehicle before escape. The survillence camera is always show up in everywhere at gas stations. The hearing women didn't lock their car while pumping the gas and someone approach her vehicle and sneak out, open the door in gentle and grabbed her purses and iPhone out of her vehicle and the woman heard and saw the car escaped from her and discovered her purse and iPhone stole and try to run and confront at Hispanics but already escape so fast. The people need to aware about suspects prey for purse, cellphones, iPad from the vehicles. They need to be responsible to lock the vehicles before go to gas station to buy gas and etc or pump the gas. That is common senses with suspects are motivate to do that.

It seems that there are holes in this story.

The manager says the employee was overwhelmed from the situation. To be overwhelmed is uninerstandable but at the same time, the manager says they do have notebook. Why wasn't it used? It seems that it was unthinkable at the time.

In the video, the girl says she was crying and was scared but she did not mention about walking to home after the robbery happened when in fact, her vehicle has not been stolen. Why did she not drive herself to home? It doesn't make sense.

The way I see it, the interpreter on the video was not clear and it seems that the terp had a hard time ilunderstanding her. This leads to make me think that there are holes in the story when there is not any adequate information exchanged by through the interpreter.

Detroit....is where you should not stop anywhere even for gas station. Just get out of there, go to north, west or south a couple of two miles outta Detroit, you'll be fine. Detroit turned into nothingness, but abandoned crap houses, infested city of crimes number 1 in U.S. Been to Detroit a several times before (there has casino, hotel, Hard Rock Café, business area) but never visit there ever again except transfer flight at the airport. Nothing special.

Would you give her a break? She was confused and scare of what happen to her. The guy who pushed her and took her cellphone and ran off whether in a car or just ran off. She is deaf and could not speak. She tried to explain to the gas station man that she need help by calling 911 for police. But no one did anything for her. So she went home very scare and confusing. She thought when she was at home, she knew that the police would not believe her if she told the story about what happen to her. She was afraid the guy would come back if she stay at the gas station. Most criminal sometime do come back and attack again. You are blaming her for her fault. At the gas station after the robbery and pushed by the guy. She had no way to contact 911 without her cellphone or iPhone. She was useless and that is why she need help as she was helpless. She was lost because she is deaf. Did you see her signed? She is fluent in signing. So don't blame her. What is wrong with you, guys? That is something I don't understand why you do this to her. Geeze. :(
