Pilots lock down cockpit over praying passengers

LOS ANGELES – Pilots on an Alaska Airlines flight locked down the cockpit and alerted authorities after three passengers conducted an elaborate orthodox Jewish prayer ritual during their Los Angeles-bound flight.

Airline spokeswoman Bobbie Egan says the crew of Flight 241 from Mexico City became alarmed Sunday after the men began the ritual, which involves tying leather straps and small wooden boxes to the body.

The cockpit was placed on a security lockdown — meaning the door couldn't be opened even for pilots to leave briefly.

FBI and customs agents, along with police and fire crews, met the plane at the gate at Los Angeles International Airport.

Airport police say three men — all Mexican nationals — were escorted off the plane, questioned by the FBI, and released. They were not arrested.

Are you referring to their open worship aboard a plane in front of passengers and staff?

If this is what you are referring to then I agree as I seldom see people openly worshiping or practicing their religion whichever it is they practice.

Because of the description of the use of the tefillin.

I know my MIL always does a blessing before we eat, even in public at restaurants. Lately, we have had the wait staff ask us to not do it again as it was offensive to others n the dining room. My thought is, if we are being quiet and not including others, what's the issue?

We always pray before eating, even at restaurants, fast food places too...we've never been asked to cease...if we were, I would not eat there again....Our simple prayer goes...."Thank you for the world so sweet.....Thank you for the food we eat....Thank you for the birds that sing....Thank you, God...for everything"...Amen...it's a simple prayer of thanks, not elaborate or noisy!

We always pray before eating our meals, whether public or private. I would inform the manager of that restaurant that if they don't like you praying there they won't have to worry about it in the future because you won't be coming back.

there are many Jewish people who are of Mexican or Latin American descent
Converso - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
as well as Irish Jews, African-American Jews as Jiro mentioned...

as far as the group wrapping tefillin etc <yes those could be Hasidim of which there are many sects> on the plane...I don't know, I can see both sides there.

Hey Jiro - Off Topic here, but for some reason, I see your little dog running faster than before. Did you give him an energy drink or something?

Yes I know a Jew can be any color/race, but it's the first time I've heard of Mexican Jew.

I've known about German Jews for as long as I can remember and I know of black Jews in Northern Africa.

Not saying it's bad or 'wrong', just noticed the oddity of it. Kind of makes me think of a Gringo standing at the Wailing Wall for some reason.

My family did this as well when I was growing up. We probably would have talked to the manager and explained they would not be getting any more business from our church members on Sundays.
