FREEPORT, N.S. - An animal rights group has sent an urgent appeal to a Nova Scotia lobster fisherman thinking of selling a giant lobster, believed to be more than 100 years old.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is asking Beau Gillis to let the old lobster live by allowing a PETA lobster liberator to help release him.

PETA president Ingrid Newkirk says the organization hopes Gillis, who is from Freeport, finds it in his heart to give the old lobster a chance to live out his remaining days in peace.

Newkirk says lobsters are complicated, interesting animals and this one has escaped the pot for a century or more.

She says the decent thing to do would be to show a bit of compassion towards the lobster.

Boil it. Eat it with a bit of melted garlic butter. Yum.

Lobsters can't scream anyway in scalding water.

Eat it. Just for the noteriety of having to eat a 100 yr old lobster.

Get the boiler ready. And so don't worry, lobsters cannot scream while being cooked in boiling water. It's impossible.

Personally, I'd want to keep it in an aquarium so I can show it off to friends and family.

Actually older lobsters taste bad. It's not surprising that there is a 100 year old lobster because after a certain age, they throw back the lobster. Too bad for the person who is going to eat the 100 year old lobster, he'll be disappointed!

Wow! 100 years old! Leave the guy be...he has earned the respect.

Sure I can. You? Seriously doubt it.

I'm now confused.

At first you said it could not scream. Now you say you can hear it scream?

About me, have no doubt. I can not hear lobsters, lambs, or pretty much anything else screaming.

They probably scream at a very high frequency that we cannot hear. Rats and mice communicate at 50,000 Hz. An average human can only hear up to 18,000 to 21,000 Hz. A profound-loss indiviual can hear up to 8,000 Hz or so with hearing aids.

lobster cannot scream. it does not have vocal chord. It was just violently thrashing around for a couple seconds... which sounds like it's screaming.

boiling live lobster at home is not for faint of heart.

Okay

The 'lobster scream' is caused by steam escaping from the shell, does not always happen, sounds like a poorly made kettle.

Now rabbits scream... like a baby human.
