Police: Officer fired for demanding free coffee

Police: Officer fired for demanding free coffee

Fla. cop allegedly threatened workers with slower responses if they refused

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - An internal affairs report says a Daytona Beach police officer demanded free coffee and tea from a Starbucks and threatened employees with slower emergency response times if they refused.

Lt. Major Garvin, a 15-year veteran, was fired July 8. According to the Daytona Beach News-Journal, Chief Mike Chitwood says Garvin recently failed a polygraph test that he insisted on taking.

The coffeehouse's employees claim that since June 2007, Garvin had visited the store as many as six times a night while on duty. Besides demanding free drinks, workers complained that Garvin also cut in front of paying customers.

A telephone listing for Garvin could not be found.

Frankly, I think he should have been fired. He threatened the business that if they did not give him free coffee, he would not respond quickly if they called the police for help.

A police officer gets paid to do a job, just like anyone else. That is all he is entitled to. If a business wants to show their appreciation by giving him a free cup of coffee, that's fine. But he has no right to demand that they do so, or to threaten them with slower response times. He is paid to protect and respond to calls. He cannot pick and choose which ones he wants to respond to.

Ahhh..... the "Starbucksination of our Society."

Chances are high that the cop was turned away by Dunkin Donuts or Krispy Kreme and decided to pursue Starbucks for his free coffee and tea.

He got what he deserved.

Police already have enough image problems. It was good he got fired. It sends a message that his actions are not condoned by higher authorirty.

Some cops think they're all that.
I think it is not enough punishment for him to get fired, because I want him to do the 500 hours of community service, like washing the floor, cleaning the toilet in Starbucks, or something like that.

Well, one was a court decision, the other came from inside the police dept. It was an internal matter. Evidently, in this case, there was an ethical police commissioner in charge.

He should pay for the coffee just like everybody else. It doesnt mean that he deserve a free coffee. If he get the free coffee then everyone will want to have a free coffee then the business will go out of the business. That wouldnt be good.

If he enjoy their coffee then he should pay it.

It's happened about one man that who work at correctional facility and he parked his regular SUV (not emergency vehicle) on fire lane at wal mart supercenter then police caught it and wait for him to get out of store then he got in trouble, he said he's correctional staff and had rights to park on fire lane then they are ended up and argued until he got arrested, it was happened in last year.

Police and correctional staff have no powers to control the business, if police car is park on fire lane then it's right because police car is part of emergency vehicle.

All this remind me of the bumper sticker I saw few years ago that says "Cops: Just say no to donuts"

Guess this cop want coffee to wash down those donuts.

I know what you're getting at, Liebling ... yes, he deserved to be fired, but the serious offenders are let off scot-free while the minors get fired or a jail sentence. Stupid rules! *smh*

A state trooper around here got caught with two marijuana plants growing on his back yard (imagine that!). They'd gone the whole mile with this trooper, stripping him of his badge, etc. There was a concern that, because the trooper was caught doing a crime, his cases where he'd made arrests were suspect.

I wonder if that would happen with this police officer's past arrests.

It could certainly be a possibility. Like, arrests for trumped up charges for those that failed to comply with his "demands".
