Saggy Pants Law

Quote:
TALLAHASSEE, Florida (Reuters) - The Florida Senate wants public school students to pull up their pants.

Lawmakers passed a bill on Thursday that could mean suspensions for students with droopy britches. It won't become law unless the House of Representatives passes a companion measure.

Florida could join several southern U.S. towns and cities that have passed "saggy pants" laws aimed at outlawing what some teenagers consider a fashion statement -- wearing pants half way down their buttocks, exposing flesh or underwear.

Supporters say schools sometimes don't properly police dress codes and parents are often "under aware" of what their kids are wearing to school.

Critics say the measure is unnecessary, arguing that appearance and dress codes should be the responsibility of school districts and parents.

Despite being the butt of jokes, the bill's sponsor, Orlando Sen. Gary Siplin, a Democrat, has said the fashion statement has a back-story -- it was made popular by rap artists after first appearing among prison inmates as a signal they were looking for sex.

"All we're trying to do now is trying to inform folks that we have a fad now that does not have a very good origination," Siplin said. "We're trying to make an example in school," he added, saying it would help students get jobs and a degree.

The Florida city of Riviera Beach passed its own saggy pants law on Tuesday, with a maximum penalty of 60 days in jail for repeat offenders.

Just as simple to yank the pants off the person, at least they would learn their lesson!

It's bad bill, in my opinion.

It should be between school and parent's responsibility about saggy pants, not bother state to pass the stupid bill, also I feel bad for people who is big fan of hip hop style.

I'm one of them that wear saggy pant (or low rise) so often but different from other teenager's saggy pant, just rather to mention as low rise that where my upper boxer is covered by shirt, plus I'm overweight (closer to obesity) and have wear it below than stomach.

Im not a fan of the pants being worn around the kneecaps. Ive seen those and Im usually VERY tempted to yank the pants down and run away laughing at them. Maybe I should at least when they are around me they'll pull those pants up where they belong! LOL

Dixie, a few feeks back I saw a security video ftom a metropolitan train in some large city. A bully with pants down past his crack was walking along the aisle harassing riders. As he was tearing the newspaper some woman was reading, a man across the aisle from her came up behind the bully and pulled his pants down just like you said. The bully was so humiliated that he quickly left. Ha ha ha ha.

But I'm surprised the man who made the bully look so silly wasn't arrested and thrown in jail. The bully probably felt violated and needed therapy.

Good on him but I’m also surprised that it didn’t backfire … the bully could have turned around and beaten him but on the other hand, it did served him right!

Man, I am really sick of seeing butt cracks and thongs. I mean, geez! I agree with this law, I mean, it's nasty. People continue to be offended by this to this date because it's really offensive. I relaly don't care what right of expression kids wanna try to make this be, it's not! People need to be respectful to others. There's a reason why we feel yucky when we see saggy pants, thongs and underwears. You may say look away, but seriously, do you really think "look away" is enough?

I have to laugh every time they parade around flashing the world their unmentionables … how can they be comfortable when they ‘waddle’ around like ducks, not walking properly, holding onto their pants? …. beats me.

Wow! What about time!

I think that the law should be revised that they should be sent to a community center to clean up the town and highways for 60 days instead of jail. A jail is a bad place for them to learn from "criminal teachers," and that would end up more crimes later.

To be honest, I think it's pretty pathetic that the government is being relied on to make this so-called law. The school districts should be responsible to enforce such a policy without having to be required by the law to do so. All schools should have a dress code, most schools enforced them back then. I guess they are all now wussies and afraid of giving their students detention!

Well, they do have laws some places against gang attire such as gang 'label' clothes...even certain colors are banned from schools. Innitially it seems too much but the gang attire has gotten out of hand and causes fights etc or peer pressure to dress same and act out in gang style. Tired of the whole ganger shyt I see. Fawk it all...no pity from me or tolerance. Same goes for the ghetto noise. They want to act violent then give it to em.
I say it would be appropiate to make 'droopy britches' .....ha ha nice term.....make em clean up turds off the sidewalk....hey dumbazz, you dropped a turd, pull up your pants.

Does that apply to plumbers and tradesmen? After all, they have been showing that part of their anatomy for years. To most of us, we turned a blind eye whereas we’re creating a stink on saggy pants due to a long-held fad. Go figure.

Baggy pants.. it is not only a problem in schools... It is seeing ass and underwear in public. Isn't there already a law about indecent exposures. I am sorry. I personally don't want to see someones back side or brand name of their Underwear or the tattoo on someones rear end. Some one strutting with their pants down to their knees, Suppose to be cool?

Reminds me when I was watching a Fox T.V. show COPS.. a man that wore his drawers down to his knees ran from a cop... guess what?? ... he tripped and stumbled on his britches, eventually losing his pants to a German Shepard K-9 dog. LMAO good catch.

Yup, that's true.

I don't like government that judge on clothing issue except for nudity.

If some of people don't like to see their butt then just ignore them and don't bother them, sagging isn't always to be gang or bad reputation, most hardcore, punk, some alternative rock and extreme fashion (not hip hop, just like AE shirt, jean with half or full sagging) are wear sagging, full or half. I'm wear half sagging because of my type, half sagging is just like little below than underwear on back, I'm usually cover them with my shirt.

Not all Hip hop are bad reputation, it's culture and some associate with gangs or crime, just depends on artists. I love to watch hip hop music video.

Most job don't allow sagging except for some job, such as music artists, tattoo, club and clothing store that's based on hip hop, types of rock and extreme fashion, even some job are poorly enforcement like certain location of Wal-Mart and other several retail.

hip hop style can do better than having their pants hopping off their hips.

It shouldn't be up to the school districts.

It should be up to the parents that allow their children to dress this way.

Difference between plumbers/tradesmen and hip-hop is that the plumbers/tradesmen are usually wearing their tools around their belt for easy accessibility whereas hip-hop isn't.

When wearing a tool belt with hammers, wrenches, etc, it does weigh one's pants down.
