Kindergartner suspended for Mohawk haircut

Mother refuses to alter boy's spiked hair, will enroll him at another school

The school said the hair was a distraction for other students. "I understand they have a dress code. I understand he has a uniform. But this is total discrimination," she said. "They can't tell me how I can cut his hair." An administrator at the suburban Cleveland charter school first warned Barile last fall that the haircut wasn't acceptable. The school later sent another warning to her reiterating the ban. Mohawks violate the school's policy on being properly groomed, school Principal Linda Geyer said. Also, the school district's dress code allows school officials to forbid anything that interferes with the conduct of education. Ruda's hair became a disruption last week when Ruda arrived freshly shorn, Geyer said. Administrators called Barile on Friday telling her to pick Ruda up from school. "This was his third infraction," Geyer said Tuesday. "We felt that we were being extremely patient." Rather than request a hearing to appeal the suspension, Barile said she'll enroll him at another school. Changing the hairstyle is not an option, she said. "It's something that he really likes," Barile said. "When people hear Mohawk, they think it's long, it's spiked, it's crazy looking, and it's really not."

Mother is suppose to follow school authorites' rules but she doesn't. It's sad to see it teachs the children to learn how to disobey any rules.

I personally see nothing wrong with that hair. I have seen many US soliders around where I work have one like this. I also seen children as well. They look cute to me. It's just a hair.

My opinion that they should focus problems, like bullying, drugs, etc in the school than worry about hair style. I find hard to beleive that his hair style is a sign of "disrespectful"?... I have seen many people have odd looking but inside they are really nice but a mother really can't do anything when the school authorities have the right to fix their rules what they want to. If she don't like then look for other school.

Well I think the mother has gone a bit too far. 6 years old is too young to have that kind of hair cut. Sure we know school discipline has gone overboard in a lot of places as we have heard and read news in AD threads. But this one is more of bizarre how mother would allow 6 years old to have that kind of hair cut. They gave her warnings she ignored it and 3 strikes, they kick him out of school. That's a shame of the mother's behavior.

I was thinking about Angelina Jolie's son had a mohawk and he was just a toddler. I'm noticing alot of young kids are dying their hair or highlight.

I won't let my daughter dye her hair til she's older, I just can't imagine letting her dye her hair at age 10.

as far as a haircut, I can't say its wrong for him to have a mohawk. if its not in the handbook then why was he really suspended? was he suspended for other reason but won't say why? Have you guys noticed the hairstyle the boys are wearing? the 70's hair-do. long hair falling in their faces? is that okay too? sure why not? what's wrong with a mohawk? what's wrong with a bowl cut?

IMO, i think it's something the school won't say but found an excuse to suspend him over a mohawk.

I have to agree with Calvin on this one.. because that young little boy is way too young to have a hair cut like that for his age. The mother should have use good common judgment how his hair cut should be just like normal little boys. What the hell was she thinking? She must be a nut! :-)

When I was six years old, I worried about where my Hot Wheels were, how to get acceptably dirty, and how to get cookies out of the jar. Hair was the last thing on my mind . . . except the hair I removed from my sister's barbie dolls.

I wonder if the mother is using the son (as a tool) to act out on her own sense of inadequacy.

I watched a wife swap on abc channel. I saw many mohawk boys got an attitude. They have a bad behave at school and home. They have a disrespect and disobey from school's rules. Their punk and gothic mothers are bad reputation. I like the style of soilder hair. My husband has a solider style. He always go to barber once time every month. We won't allow our boy to have a MoHawk hair. The mothers can let girls to dye color like pink, blue, hot red, purple hair.

I dont think kids under 10 years of age should be dying their hair or having treatments such as a perm done to it.

But crazy haircuts don't bother me that much, especially on young children. Its just something the kids like and find fascinating. But there is a certain line I wont cross though. Im not going to le my DD get a boy cut at age 4, when she's 14 and can take care of her own hair, then it's up to her what she wants.

I think schools need to step back and think for a moment - that at age 4 the kid is highly unlikely involved in gang activity. If he's got discipline problems, then they need to be dealt with accordingly, not blame everything on a haircut that the school dislikes.
