Mom sues after IVF brings 2 babies instead of 1

Mom sues after IVF brings 2 babies instead of 1
Australian woman seeks $332,000 to cover cost of raising extra child

Updated: 4:43 p.m. ET Sept. 18, 2007

Quote:
CANBERRA, Australia - An Australian woman who gave birth to twins instead of a single baby after receiving in-vitro fertilization has sued her doctor for the cost of bringing up the second child.

The woman, who cannot be identified because of a court order, is seeking more than 400,000 Australian dollars (US $332,000) to cover the expense of raising one child until age 21.

Testifying in the Supreme Court of the Australian Capital Territory on Tuesday, the 40-year-old mother said she told her doctor, Robert Armellin, that she only wanted one child. But an embryologist under the doctor's supervision implanted two embryos in her uterus, resulting in the birth of non-identical twin girls.

The woman told the court that she and her partner were devastated when they learned she was carrying twins, and had even considered putting one of the babies up for adoption.

She said that while she enjoyed some aspects of her pregnancy, such as decorating the girls' nursery, other parts were distressing, including purchasing a stroller, or pram.

"It was like the last frontier of acceptance to spend hundreds of dollars on a pram," she said.

The couple, whose combined income exceeds A$100,000 (US $82,875), are seeking A$398,000 (US $329,000) to cover the costs of raising one of the girls, including private school fees. They also want around A$15,000 (US $12,427) to compensate them for time off work and medical expenses.

Yes, there isn't very much sympathy for them here. There are even moves afoot to try and change the law so that people can't sue over the birth of healthy babies.

Those women just have to accept that life doesn't go perfectly at times. I can't believe she was so distressed over the cost of the stroller that she expects to be compensated for it. She could have picked up a cheap double stroller on ebay easily.

Disgusting. She ought to be thankful for the extra blessing and be happy that the doctor didn't charge her for the bonus.

I hope she gets over this attitude before the kids notice her negativity towards their existence.

If the "parents" don't realize that raising children is all about self sacrifice now, then I pity the poor twins in that household. They will always come in "second" to their parents' wallets.

If she has over $100 thousand dollars a year, she should not complain about having two babies. If she is making so much money each year, she can easily save up for the educations of both babies. My parents make about half of that at best and were fine with me and my sister. She clearly values money more than human lives. She also doesn't understand that they often put in multiple embryos as an insurance against failure.

My opinion: if that is her attitude, then she doesn't need to be the parent of any children, much less two. Remove them both from her custody!

i would have agree with comments on posts!

but if i have twins or more baby one days but i can get my own to raise the babies i dont have making mistakes for sues to IVF or doctors but must have agree with doctors for tests getting pregnant of mothers but its really harder! its lots of money for baby incomes between spouses have jobs to earn money.

If i got pregnant one days and i would getting test on pregnant and dont work out they i would think about plans going IVF planning get pregnant in future because my mom is nurse for CCU but i will get that test of pregnant in future after i got married one days if i would agree with my husband one days they ahead for IVF to taking that pregnant! because im using Birth Control pills everyday to protect cramps and peroids, pregnant also!

I agree with you all here.

It look like that she has no love but "sacrifice" her life for 2nd child. *shake my head*

I hope the judge is on our side and doctor's side against her.

That's the problem with laws nowadays.

With them, there's still chaos.

Wow... She is something else! and if you think the doctor probably thought that there was a chance one of the embryo's wouldn't take and wanted to give her the best chance of having a baby the first time around cause if i'm not mistaken doesn't it take big bucks to get IVF?? If she's got the money for that she's got the money for another baby.

If I was the 2nd twin and read something like this later on, I would be devastated. The mother better get her act straight or her daughters will have serious pychological issues to deal with.

I totally agree,, she forget that IVF can produce more than one babies and that not very supriseing what doctors do. If I were in her shoe have two mircale babies I would have been so bless with two wonderful babies. Doctors can create mircles for us when we at least expect it. :-)

My husband and I have raised 7 children on less than $40,000 per year. We have
never felt deprived and all our babies are blessings. One must learn to cook from
scratch though. Learn to sew and otherwise pinch pennys. 3 more to go!

Responsibility for All Life

Can anyone imagine a mother who explains to you that your biological mother gave you up for adoption . . . because of a fertility session gone too well?

If the child was to look for his birth mother, what would she say?

I find it difficult to believe that she did not know the risks involved. I am appalled that she is not willing to accept responsibility.

In the future, would her heart be colder? Would the child she chooses to keep be treat like a possession and not a human being?

That is really disgusting and she should be ashamed to ask for money and stuff like this since having twins is truly a blessing and it is from God.!
