Best Western hotel refuses service dog.

I wonder whether or not Best Western headquarter can shut that hotel down or end the business with the owner since s/he gives Best Western a black name.

Nevertheless, Best Western's corporate office contacted Vaughan a week later and offered to honor her reservation. But for Vaughan, it was too little, too late.

I was going to post this but forgot. The hotel said they know the law but they have to listen to the owner of the hotel. WTF ! Since when is hotel owner is about the law?? I stay at 3 hotels that allowed me to bring my hearing dog , Finlay . One hotel was in Vermont and they got the memo.

When management does something stupid like this, they open themselves up to a personal lawsuit or a government one. As you know, the ADA is a federal law and can make someone regret what happened. It makes you wonder what kind of people are hired to answer the phone.

The hotel won't be shut down but the manager and some other employees may loose their jobs. It might depend on how many people contact Best Western and complain to corporate.

And I wonder why there are exclusive lists online for dog friendly hotels?

Doesn't matter if you're not a pet friendly hotel or not. You have to accept a service animal regardless. The lists online for dog friendly hotels are for people who want to travel with their pets or "comfort pets" since comfort pets aren't recognized by the ADA. I knew someone who worked for Marriott hotels for instance. Marriott is a huge fancy hotel chain. They do NOT take animals at all whatsoever in any of their hotels. However, they will accept service animals. ( seeing eye dogs ect. ) because they are recognized by the ADA and needed. Comfort pets or traveling companions are not recognized by the ADA therefore not accepted at Marriott. Some chains such as LaQuinta, Days Inn and various other chains will accept pets for fees. :P

On TV, I just watched a comedy series, Growing Up Fisher - Season 1, Episode 13: Growing Up Fairbanks - TV.com with CC (that video has too many ads, Hulu = :barf:). Anyway it was about a family vacation in Catalina Island and a hotel manager lied to a father who is blind that it's fully booked after she found out that he brought his service dog, even though he had a reservation. It's a good example. BTW, he and his ex-wife decided to play games with the hotel manager by pretending to be someone else to call for a room and she said it is available. BUSTED!

I used 3 hotels that where not pets friendly but they all welcome Finlay who was my hearing dog. I had restaurants tell me they only had to allow to guide dogs for the blind and a manger tried to kick my daughter ,Finlay out of his restaurant . A waitress told the manger he was wrong and he needed to let us stay. I wish we had left b/c I forget how horrible the food was there. My daughter was so upset about that she called the home office and spoke to that manger's boss and the boss said he already heard what had happen and was very sorry about it and spoke to the manger . So some businesses are trying to follow the ADA Act .

Still no excuse for them, this is 2014, not 1960. Come on, they know the LAW and they must abide by it. Those who don't want to abide by the law make me sick, meaning they have no respect for our rights.

I knows what you mean but there some people that want to follow the ADA Act but they're too afraid to like in person the OP story , that person did not have to guts to stand up their boss. The waitress I spoke about had the guts to stand up to her manger , we need more people like that waitress and of course I told the manger it would be cheaper to let me eat there. It would be great if group of people that had service dogs walked into a public place. I had always wanted to this with Finlay. We also have to be more active to made sure the ADA Act is being followed

It sounds like someone is going to get some money from Best Western. After all is said and done the owner might rethink his policy and follow the law.

I do not have one and have not been involved with the use of them. But. . . I get the impression NOW the fight is to get the word out just what all "service dogs" are used for. Some may be aware of the ADA but NOT some of the uses for service dogs.

Well, I believe that if you have a service dog, you have to carry the paperwork with you to prove that it's a service dog (if that's what you want to know). For example, you get a discount on public transportation if you show your ID card to prove that you are deaf.

WDYS, do you carry the paperwork with you for that purpose?

I don't paperwork is required. And you can't be asked what your disability is, but you can be asked what service the service animal provides.

There is no standard paperwork for service dogs.

What kind of ID do you have that proves you are deaf? That is, who issues it? The transportation department?

Oh, so how do you prove that it's a service dog? As you may know, some people can fake it if paperwork is not required. For example, to get a discount on public transportation, a bus driver won't give you the discount, even though you say you are deaf until s/he sees your ID card. Can you imagine hearing people can fake it to get a bus discount if a proof is not required?

What I mean is that I can bring my pet dog to a hotel and when I am asked why I bring it with me, I can fake it saying that I am deaf and it's a service dog while it's not without showing paperwork like an ID card or something like that.

I never forget about airport. I asked one employee where is gate 12 after I let him know that I am deaf. He said to me, "Wait, someone else will help you" while he paged it so I waited until someone gave me a ride to the gate. In other words, hearing people can fake it so they can get a ride.
