A deep sea lancetfish washed up alive on a Nags Head, North Carolina beach on Monday. WGHP Fox 8 reports that because it is an open ocean fish, lancetfish are rarely seen near shore. North Carolina Aquarium worker Daryl Law sent photos of the lancetfish to the station. He said that the fish was released after the photos were taken.

The species have long, high dorsal fins and can grow over six feet long. Their jaws contain several long fang-like teeth as well as several smaller teeth. The station notes that very little is known about the biology of the fish, except that they live in all oceans, with the exception of the polar seas.

It's still alive unless sharks eat it.

And a goner, too. It needs the pressure of the deep sea to survive.

if i'm not mistaken, its not the pressure once acclimated slowly. In the fish hobby there are many fish from the deep waters (not that deep like the lancet but its quite deep deep lake or parts of ocean) that make it just fine to the surface and into the hobbyist fish tank

... if the guy went up so slow it would have been fine. I think the more pressing issue was the temperature of the water, its cold down there some fish cannot tolerate warmer water and perish. Its vice versa for other species of fish, some have to have warm water , the cold will instantly kill them.
